Worth upgrading to a 40 lane cpu/board?

Hey folks, 

 

Please find my current system in my signature.

 

The current situation is that my mobo probably broke, the second Pcie slot only runs at 4x speed. So I cannot use my SLI properly.

 

FYI I am only gaming with my PC.

 

Would you just get another Z97 and run at 8x/8x? 

 

I am also considering upgrading to a x99 with 6850k. Would I see any big performance increase? The costs would be $150 vs $1100.

 

Do you think it's worth?

 

Or sell both 1080s and get the new Titan?

 

I would also overclock the new cpu, but I doubt it will hit anywhere near my current 4.6ghz.

You won't get any improvement in gaming performance from X99 even with dual gpus. If you want a small boost get Z170, an i7-6700k, and some fast DDR4 but what a waste of money when the i7-4790k is such an outstanding gaming cpu. At least if you're sure your 4790k isn't the problem (and if it is it should still be in warranty).

I'll get a new Z97 and see how it goes.

 

The lower Pcie slot got stuck at 4x after I added and removed a nvme ssd.

 

Therefore I assume it's only the motherboard.

i would try to just reset the CMOS first and if it doesnt work search for a BIOS update for your board..

Hi, checking at motherboards website that m.2 port is only giving you 10Gbps connection so you are wasting your nvme s full potential, if you can sell or not use the nvme since it wont be running at full speed you can either add another samsung 830 if you can find or get 2x 750/850 Evo drivers and run a raid 0 setup and to 1GB read write speeds.

 

for pci-e issue once you removed the nvme

 

for SLI you can only use the red pci-e x16 connections

 

Black one will give you x4 even your nvme is no allocated.

 

for other pcie settings like disablin nvme and x4 pci e you need to go into bios>advanced>pci express configuration.

 

for motherboard pci-e lane configuration you need to go in bios>advanced>system agent configuration>nb pci-e configuration.

 

but usually after you cmos bios reset - and if you have 2 red pcie lanes occupied it will automaticly select the 8x 8x sli mode unless you have the nvme slot occupied if its on it may confuse the board.
