Wifi Repeater or Router

SpeederT12

Hey guys,

So, I do not have wifi coverage in the other end of my flat, where my gaming pc is, so I have to have good strong wifi connection. So, I now have an old single antenna router set up with dd-wrt as a repeater. For proof of concept, it works, but it is not very fast and it gets easily overloaded as it is old and slow (100mbps). So, what should I buy: A new better router set up as a repeater or a dedicated wifi repeater?

Thanks in advance!

Well, id recommend either a wifi range extender, or powerline Ethernet adapters, but regardless of which you choose upgrading the router would definately help with the cap

Or mounting bigger antennas to your existing wireless router. For me swapping 3x3dbi antennas in favor of 3x8dbi made quite a big difference for devices at the border of signal coverage of original antennas.

is it possible for you to run a cable some of the way?

In that case - get an Access Point instead.

if not - powerline + access point :D

Repeaters are always a bad solution and all routers should adhere to the same standards and laws, so the coverage should be more or less the same regardless of the router (if it is consumer hardware and it is the same RF environment)

Im talking about using a router AS a repeater, not about buying a new router.

Your ping will be laughable over Wi-Fi, especially with a repeater. Those things are an embarassment to modern networking and a testament to ignorant consumers.

Take the effort to wire your gaming PC over Ethernet to your router; it is worth doing even if you don’t do first-person shooters. You can run 100 feet of gigabit ethernet in your flat before having to add in a repeater.

I used a Tp link WR740N as a repeater and I got 8ms ping using speedtest.net and 30ms in Counter Strike GO, though that is until someone else connects and starts using it. I believe that that is because of its piny 100mbps bandwith, 1 antenna and age, so I think that a dedicated repeater will work better
