No matter how much you overclock the 480, and as long as he has a fairly modern system, I don't believe it will ever completely fry the system, nor will it catch fire (what I believe you meant by "burn it"). The GPU should fry itself out long before either of those things happen. Also, if your friend is reasonably tech savvy, they will know that giving someone a GTX 480 today is not meant as an upgrade to their system, and they would probably be suspicious.

If you have a GTX 480 sitting in your closet collecting dust, this may be something to do with it, and I can't really find a good reason not to do it, so there you go.

I will most likely not respond to you in a thread unless you quote me.

maybe we should "prank" OP by going over to his house and throw a rock trough every window.

wouldnt that be hilareous?

seriously.. what i just described is basicly what OP wants to do...

really?

I could get overclocking it to a sensible level, running a benchmark or folding @ home in the background, then watching as his room heats up to unbearable levels, but overclocking it until it or his system fries is just wrong on so many different levels it would't pass in a multi storey car park.

Also, overclocking it until it fries is kind of counter-intuitive, because in order to know at what threshold it fried, you would have to overclock it until it reached it, and by then it would be fried and you wouldn't be able to insert it into his system.

it wouldnt be the first time multiple houses burned down (YES multiple. i'm not kidding around here) for a simple piece of electronics failing and arcing over onto the curtains or something.

No, I'd bet a 480 could catch fire, or make the psu catch fire.
