Can't decide on gpu for 1440p upgrades

Hi guys

I am going to take the step to 1440p at christmas but i cant decide on the gpu

There is the obvious 1060 and rx480 which both perform good 

But there is the r9 fury(on sale for £300) which can crossfire and has hbm but has a high power draw and will make my pc a toaster.

The 980 is another option as it supports sli but only has 4gb of gddr5 so will this be limiting at 1440?

If you're going for multi-GPU in the near future prepare for headaches. I've personally experienced them so many times and gave up.

I was thinking it as an option but i have heard they are a hassle, which gpu would you got to for that price?

u getting the new gpu in december? prob can wait for vega then. To answer your question though, if you want g/free-sync go with either the rx 480 or fury. The fury will perform the best.

If you're aiming for 60 fps maxed out settings then the Fury and 980 will not be able to do that on modern resource heavy titles. Which means you're most likely going to lower some settings to achieve playable FPS, 40 at the very minimum for my personal taste which means VRAM consumption will not be an issue at all.

I dont mind running on med-high as i have a 1080 tn panel and 1440 ips will be a massive jump

yes december, depends what vega cards come out, it could be like the 750ti

I will buy around black friday/christmas so it depends if there are any steals on blackfriday

If you can find a very very good deal on either a 980 Ti/Fury X then those will probably your best bet.

say the sli was fine, is 4gb even enough for 1440p?

I have just read that the 1060 wont be as good in the future due to dx12 support, how true is this as i thought as better drivers come out perf improves?

Thanks  Do you think a 1060 at medium settings at 1440p will give 60fps in any game? Also how much of a difference is 1080p tn in comparison to 1440p ips?

pffff...easily...look Paul at paul's hardware tested games with the GTX 1060 @ 2560x1080 and 3440x1440 resolutions and you can clearly see that thing handle the busines..very high settings in GTA 5 and all that...at 2560x1440 that thing will rock high settings and 80FPS.

1440p vs 1080p is a lot nicer...much crisper...require less anti-aliasing and all that...TN vs IPS...IPS colors look better, but IPS can have backlight bleeding and dead pixels...do your research.

Thanks, i just want it to last though as this will be my first 1440p experience and i dont upgrade whenever something new comes out (at xmas it is the 4tth year with my current rig and when i plan to upgrade)

if you want more GPU headroom for the future then maybe consider a GTX 1070 but obviously the price is noticeably higher on those, they are more powerful though...not sure which one is the best bang for your bucks but one thing for sure both can handle 1440p very well in current games...GTX 1070 having about the same level of performance as my overclocked GTX 980ti i can assure you this thing will max out anything at 2560x1440 with 100FPS.

I guess i will see what black friday brings with 1070 deals, but if i get a 1060 i have seen it ocs well so it should be fine in the future

yeah and as you can see in paul's video i don't know if you've watched it but the max temp this card get is only 61c throughout the video even at 3440x1440 running maxed out...so these air cooled card should overclock very well the GTX 1060 being a small and very energy efficient chip with great overclocking potential...but even at stock it's no slouch defenetely a lot fo GPU horsepower for the money and with 6GB framebuffer such a card should age very well over time.

Thanks for the input, it has helped alot, also it does well at 3440x1440 which is harder to run aswell

yeah sure...3440x1440 is 33% more pixels than 2560x1440...so yeah, it can do 21:9 1440p...chances are it'll do great at 2560x1440...as you can see sometimes with that card is just a matter of dropping one or 2 settings and off you go...it's a solid card for the price and 1440p gaming is entirely worth it vs 1080p.

 

I used to game on a 24'' 1920x1080 TN panel myself, and when i plugged my 2560x1440 27'' IPS monitor in there i was stunned by the quality of the images on screen even running the same settings.

A lot of games are no problem to run at 1440 at all. The killers are console ports. There you make the choice to spend more money on the card, or sacrifice some settings. The good news is more console ports have ridiculous settings. Settings that do nothing to the look or feel of the game, but kill fps. Find those and profit.

IMHO ULTRA settings is so overrated...99% of the time when i drop the settings from ULTRA to HIGH i CAN NOT tell the difference...HONESTLY...i can't...even if i try...the only thing i see is the 30FPS drop. Visuals = the same.
