Source 2: http://www.theverge.com/2016/7/20/12236642/corning-announces-new-gorilla-gla

  • Corning just unveiled its newest version of Gorilla Glass

    • Gorilla Glass 5, new glass was formulated to improve drop performance from gadgets that are dropped onto rough surfaces from certain heights

      • Specifically, waist height to shoulder height

  • Corning says Gorilla Glass 5 survives up to 80% of the time when dropped from 1.6 meters

  • “Two-thirds of smartphone drops happen from waist height or higher,” Corning says

  • Internal research done by Corning showed that 85% of smartphone owners have dropped their phones at least once in the past year

    • This survival rate was achieved in tests with pieces of glass that were .6mm thick

      • They make glass as thin as .4mm, so smartphone OEMs that opt for thinner glass may see different results

    • Most of these drops were flat on the phone’s face, so it doesn’t take into account corner drops

  • Gorilla Glass 5 is in production now, we should hear more about it ‘in the next few months’

  • CD Projekt Red, developer and publisher behind The Witcher franchise has always had a unique stance when it comes to DRM-free products

    • They champion the notion of selling their games without any DRM restrictions and letting the pirates do their thing

      • Regardless of the impact on sales

  • Kotaku grabbed what co-founder Marcin Iwinski had to say regarding piracy at last month’s infoShare 2016 convention:

    • “The piracy factor was irrelevant, because we can only convince them to do it. We totally believe in the carrot, not in the stick”

    • “I've seen many times, comments that say ‘hey, I couldn’t afford the game when it was full price, but these guys are so fair, and they were never against us. They were always trying to do good, add a lot of value, give free DLC, give free content, that I bought the game from them when it was mid-price”

    • “We don’t like when people steal our product, but we are not going to chase them and put them in prison”

Tesla: Elon Musk Release Part 2 of his Master Plan

Source 1: https://www.tesla.com/blog/master-plan-part-deux

Source 2: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-36852725

Part 1 of Master Plan (Laid out 10 years ago) Summarized

  • Create a low volume car, which would necessarily be expensive

  • Use that money to develop a medium volume car at a lower price

  • Use that money to create an affordable, high volume car

  • Provide solar power

Part 2 of Master Plan (Published July 20, 2016)

  • States that Tesla would be branching out into creating a “solar-roof-with-battery product” that people can have fitted to their homes

  • Wants Tesla electric car range to cover all types of ground vehicles, specifically buses and lorries

  • Once cars have full autonomous driving capabilities, Musk said Tesla would allow owners to add their cars to a shared fleet

    • Meaning vehicles can be making money for their owners when they are not using them

  • He wrote that his ambition was to “accelerate the advent of sustainable energy”

  • “We must at some point achieve a sustainable energy economy or we will run out of fossil fuels to burn and civilization will collapse”

  • “Given that we must get off fossil fuels anyway and that virtually all scientists agree that dramatically increasing atmospheric and oceanic carbon levels is insane, the faster we achieve sustainability, the better”

TL:DR Part 2 of the Master Plan

  • Create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage

  • Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments

  • Develop a self-driving  capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning

  • Enable your car to make money for you when you aren’t using it

Atomic Memory - Storage Device Writes Information Atom-by-atom

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/629573-dutch-scientists- OP: Master Disaster

Source 2: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-36824902

Source 3: http://nature.com/articles/doi:10.1038/nnano.2016.131

  • The device stores information in the positions of individual chlorine atoms

  • Dutch scientists developed rewritable memory that stores information in positions of individual chlorine atoms on a copper surface

  • With each bit of data represented by the position of a single chlorine atom, the team was able to reach a density of 500TB per square inch

  • “In theory, this storage density would allow all books ever created by humans to be stored on a single post stamp,” said Dr. Otte

  • Researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), which a sharp needle probes the atoms on the surface one by one

  • Because chlorine atoms are surrounded by other chlorine atoms, they keep each other in place

  • Despite future promise, the approach is not ready for the real-world yet

    • Stable information storage could only be demonstrated at a temperature of -196 degrees celsius

    • Speed of single write and read processes is still slow

    • Emails detail how the backer was able to obtain his refund on the grounds that:

      • “The product remains unfulfilled and no longer constitutes the product (s) I originally purchased”

  • Backer’s complaint stems from the fact that Star Citizen has changed so dramatically since its first reveal

  • Also the fact that the game hasn’t been released years after its initial crowdfunding campaign

  • Backer stated he was contacted by “an L.A. County investigator”

    • Investigator wanted to find out more information about Star Citizen because the investigator felt the game was a “scam”

  • Cloud Imperium released a statement about the refund, stating:

    • “Any refunds with respect to Star Citizen are made on a discretionary basis. There was nothing special about this situation. The face that this particular party used a complaint form that is online and openly available, doesn’t make this any different.”

After hearing about your stream issues, I have to ask. Why does the WAN show use a software setup that a gaming stream would use rather than a more traditional broadcast setup? I've done multi-camera, multi-computer video and full audio split+mix concert streams and recording with way fewer hiccups than the WAN show. I would imagine that even if you went super budget on a blackmagic ATEM TV to handle graphics, bumpers, and switching and moved the stream computer to only run the control interface with a single capture card encode without any other processing on its part you'd be way more stable.

The Linksys WRT54 is like the AK-47 of the router world.

Simple, cheap, reliable as all get out and has massive 3rd party support for the thing.

I almost bought myself another one last year but ended up getting a WRT 1900AC as I found a smoking deal on it, otherwise I would have bought another WRT54.

I live in the suburbs so the wireless airwaves aren't cluttered, it does everything I need and I can just google any issues or questions I have with it and get hundreds of results for the exact thing I want to know how to do, usually with well written step-by-step guides.

Sure I might be hampered a bit by its speed on paper but I'm not a professional streamer, content creator or other profession that requires very high internet speeds.

The one I had handled multiple netflix streams or people gaming without issue and that was all I needed from it.

I imagine that for the vast majority of homes the WRT54 is still more than sufficient to handle their needs.

You shouldn't blame the lack of competition on AMD, Linus. After all it's not their fault for Nvidia's dumb trickle-down strategy. I like being able to use the newer more efficient processes at mainstream prices under 300 dollars which is where the real graphics market is which Nvidia is barely able/willing to go. Similar with Tesla's car story. Their cars are worthless until they can make them mainstream priced.

I haven't played the Witcher games, but I like where CD Projekt Red is going with the stance on Piracy. People are always going to do it, so it's better to get accustomed and happy in that environment than be like Apple or something and ceaselessly go after them in vain, but it's funny to watch them try and get frustrated.
