PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

Yes. If it is somewhere on track tier above 7, it is fine as a temperary solution. I think it was about a 6.

Ok, thanks. Might be a stupid question but if wattage is not the problem ( it is rated to 600W and I´m not gonna use more than 500W) what is the problem with the "lower tier" PSU´s? Are the conponents just not goning to last?

P.S I´m pretty new to all of this so as I said might be a stupid question

Lower quality, worse QC and build quality, lower preformance, higher ripple, lesser voltage control, lower quality components, breaks quicker, more likely to kill something, lower warranty, shitty fans that will die...

Ok thanks, but do you think the Hyper 600W will do it for now (with the gtx 1070) and then I upgrade after christmas?

Yeah but I wouldn't do anything demanding with your system for a long period of time.

@STRMfrmXMN- XFX XT power supplies are the same as Hydrance power supplies. They're actually worse than the 'green' Corsair CX series, and should probably be in Tier 5.

Furthermore, all lower-end SeaSonic Power Supplies, like the cheap grey SS/SSP/SSR series are between Tier 3 and 4. They're not as good as the S12ii/M12ii/S12G power supplies, but they're a lot better than 'green' CX series and the EVGA units in that tier. They cut prices on the wire sleeves, fans, and casing, but given that they aren't very pretty, Tier 4 may be appropriate for them.

The ECO series is about the same as the S12ii series, so that tier (3) would be appropriate for it.

It's highly debated where they should exist :P

They used to be tier 5 but got moved up it seems.

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Oh, come on. @STRMfrmXMN- we had a whole thread's worth of converesation about this! Remember the photos of the Hydrance/XT PSU with the unnamed capacitors, tiny rectifier, dangerously bad soldering, and massive dollops of fevicol everywhere?

Chart form thread- http://www.orionpsudb.com/news/the-mystery-of-xfx-budget-xt-line-solved-oem-and-platform-discovered

Hydrance and XT are the same, dangerous power supplies.

I seem to remember thinking "Hmm, about on-par with an EVGA 500B" so I put it there after @Aereldortold me more about it. I had been meaning to move it down a smidge anyways.

Also, what about the Grey SeaSonic stuff? I think those may be the best on Tier 4 if added barring the Earthwatts and Earthwatts Platinum series. The Green CX series with their 30-degrees-celsius temperature rating can be bumped a tier below (or are the Rev 1 and 3 units better in that regard?). I'm not sure if the Tier 4 Cooler Master power supplies are any better either.

By 'a lot better than 'green' CX series and the EVGA units in that tier' I meant the stuff in Tier 4.

Make sure you specify that you're talking about the grey units. Some of the G series is also listed as part of the SSR series.

Leadex Silver is probably around Tier 3, the other Leadex are straight up Tier 1.

In factt @STRMfrmXMN I remember someone linking performance / build quality info on the leadex silver. Do you recall how good it was? So we may put it where it belongs.

Tier 3 iirc. Not as good Vreg but that's to be expected.

Perhaps tier 2? http://lab501.ro/carcase-surse/review-super-flower-leadex-silver-650w-sf-650f14mt

@STRMfrmXMN, @Energycore @Starelementpoke

Tom's hardware has uploaded a review of the EVGA BQ 850 :D

At least it uses full 105C caps (Chemi-con primary side and teapo secondary) and how it was able to provide it's full 850watts under 46C temps but doesn't have OTP and it's ripple and efficiency seems to be rather bad.

edit: Ah, it's already ranked? Ignore meh then

My analysis on the EVGA 850W BQ:

Thankfully tomshardware does a really thorough review.

2000h 105C bulk caps are pretty good, and chemi-con

Some secondaries are Teapo but Teapo isn't really that bad anymore.

Teflon nano bearing? Dafuq is that? I'll have to research that shit

2% on the 12V rail is pretty good, but just as important is that the minor rails don't kill your hard drives, and the 5V rail measured 3.5%. Ouch

Hold-up time could be longer, but at least the PWR_OK signal drops correctly

No OTP, lol GG EVGA

Shit the crossloads are pretty bad. Are you sure this thing is Double Forward + DC-DC? Or maybe it's because regulation is bad regardless of crossload.

58mV ripple on the 12V, but that's not gonna kill a CPU. Minor rails are more likely to kill your shit because of over or under voltage than the ripple itself.

Yeah, I'll happily call this a Tier 4. Would have scored higher if regulation was better on the minor rails (just use a higher rated FET ffs), but that lack of OTP maybe keeps it square out of Tier 3. No way can I recommend a PSU that's gonna eventually blow up if the fan gets obstructed.
