PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

"Overkill" is a silly word when we get no details.

Do you have the PSU already?
Is a 650/550W cheaper? Why are you looking at 750w?

That system would be fine with a high quality 550w PSU. If you plan to overclock both CPU + GPU pretty far, I'd suggest a good 650w.

Remember computer power supplies are designed as "pull". They will only deliver what your system needs. So a higher wattage PSU doesn't mean it will consume more power.

Woopsie, sorry for the lack of details and late reply (specs are in the bottom).

Budget for PSU is around $97 (Php 5,100) and as much as possible I want a modular kind of PSU.  Yeah I know and I'm aware, don't go cheap on PSU.

So I plan to overclock both CPU (mild OC or will try to get 3.9ghz) and GPU (I got a playlist of tutorial for undervolting lol). No I haven't got any PSU (that's the only missing part in my build). I asked this question bec. the Seasonic Focus+ Gold 650W (priced at $97-$99) most of the shops here in PH doesn't have stocks. -_- While the Focus+ 750W variant osts around $110.

There is one shop who has a Seasonic Focus+ "Platinum" 650W selling for $110 also, and a RM 650 for around $120.

Specs:

Ryzen 5 2600

MSI B450M Mortar

Asus strix  Vega 56

2x8gb G.skill Trident Z 3000mhz

1 500gb SSD

2x140mm fan

3x120mm fan

If my system runs around 400 watts from wall.. Should i aim for 500w or 600w psu?

System runs 14h daily. "Most of time it pulls only around 200watts" While not gaming..

Maybe could give some cheap, but good psu recommendations? Under 70Euro would be lovely.

Thanks.

CM is updating the V series, apparently. Slightly better regulation, similar ripple, slower fan curve, and within spec hold up time.

Looks halfway decent too, hopefully good competition for the F+G, TXM Gold, etc

Isn't 400 to little? Me old rig with gpu that was 140 tdp was pulling 380ish watts from wall. While gaming..

Yes bought watt meter especially for that.

While browsing net wathing videos it goes around 140w-170w Lets say with 1060 i will pull around 350ish from wall. Will 400w psu be safe? I also read that best efficiency goes around ~75% ussage. Or is that just lies..?

More likely did your whole system draw 380 W or you had a really old and for the time high end GPU. But I don't understand that your card have half the thermal dissipation of it's rated power draw.... ?

What model was your old PSU that died?

It might have been pulling 380w from the wall, but only delivering 250-300w to the system if it was a crap 10 year old $20 unit with 70% efficiency.

Is your CPU overclocked?

What rig did you use? A Pentium D???

Even with my 125W TDP CPUs like FX8350 or i7-3820 and the Radeon HD7970GHz/280X I was at around 250-300W

i7-3930K a bit higher, obviously.

And I ran my i7-3930K with the Power BIOS of my RX480 Red Devil with a 400W Pure Power 10 CM without any issues...

Why look for those? AMD's RX570 is dirt cheap right now. Like 150€ over here, so I'd rather get one of those right now...

Of course the 8GiB VRAM Version, 3GiB is just total bullshit for a higher end GPU, 4GiB the absolute minimum if you have to. But its barely enough with modern games and higher settings.

As for drawn from the wall:
What PSU was it? How efficient??

We are talking about 60-70% at worst with old, shitty PSU (Topower P4/P5 for example) up to 90% for modern Gold units...

At assumed 250W Load that would mean between 280W and 417W (usually with 80% efficiency, still 312,5W)...

Not high at all. It's group regulated, and you can find testing on Cybenetics
