PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

Coil whine is a mechanical component issue. With a little luck, you can fix it. I'm sure people here will have opinions about it, but here's my method I've used many times.

Locate the source of the noise with a funnel you make from folded cardboard or similar.

If it's an inductor, and it usually is, apply a little super glue. Some prefer wax, but that does get liquid when warm (it still works though).  Keep it well away of connectors and fans.  Excess superglue emits white dust when hardening slowly, which is mostly harmless, except to connectors and fans.

Disclaimer: This may affect your warranty.

No, its a resonant...

With the kind of noise that we're talking about, it is more probable that we're talking about ceramic Capacitors these days.

That doesn't change that there is little to do without voiding the warranty. And since Coil Whine isn't something that the warranty of some Manufactuters cover...

But it might be possible to return the Card via the Retailer anyway...

I mean, reviews aren't hard to find.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Corsair/TX750M/

For the Original model, based on the CWT PSH and the latest modular Bronze Model that might be true.

But there's a ton of different versions o fthe TX and TXM.

But to be honest: They are so old that its not really worth thinking too much about them...

So what we have here is (750W!):

TX (CWT PSH) (tons of Reviews)

TX-C - no Reviews

TX V2 (Seasonic S12II based, the one with DC-DC) -

TX -> Chicony made, no Reviews

And the latest Great Wall made Gold ones...

That's what the tier list says, yes.

What's the problem? Also, if you're making an argument, back it up with evidence.

Well I'll get around to using Rodded Walmart unit someday. but yeah just get a cheap unit and filter the Secondary everything else is probably fine....unit went godly...that's an excellent Rubycon 16v 6800uf I put in there and resoldered the wire...it's only one and will pull from it on that Rail.

No I don't care about the 5v or 3.3v rails that's fine.

Okay this isn’t evidence...

Explan to me how the G2 has “worse build quality”. There’s reviews out there.

You can’t make an argument without knowing what’s going on.

Well the older GXII Pro 750w is a very good PSU. I had dumped the Loon fan and put in a Noctua and made the Trim Pot adjustment. sitting great at 12.05v on the rails.

@Stefan Payne I wanted to ask if you know where Enermax MaxTytan falls? Is it something like a newer version of the Platimax or not even close? I found out that it is priced a bit higher than Platimax.

I myself don't have the expertise or knowledge, but awesomegamer919 and QuantumElement both said G2 is worse and I trust them so...

Electrically IIRC it was OK, though rather loud and expensive.

Here a review of the lower wattage (800W) unit:

https://www.tweakpc.de/hardware/tests/netzteile/enermax_maxtytan/s10.php

Its not too bad.

Not worth buying at $360 for an 800W though when this exists

Where did you get that shit from?!

1) the EVGA 1200 P2 is ~300€ normally. And (also) rather loud.

2) its Titanium, not just Platinum

3) it cost just ~20€ or so more than the VGA - and is a digital PSU!

As i is based on a Texas Instruments MCU...

Sorry, but you're dead wrong with that. There are other options that are better than the Enermax because its rather loud but the EVGA is not one of those as it is equally loud or even louder...
