PSU Tier List [OLD]

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

This is a legacy list. It is no longer being updated.

The new PSU Tier List can be found here:

You realize I'm not suggesting they're anywhere as useful as a professional review, right?  I just mean that if you check the reviews and see an unusual number of people reporting an exploding PSU or just that they stopped working after two months, that bears some weight.  Which I would think is something you'd agree with.

No matter what I'm looking at, I check the critical reviews first.

The Rosewill Quark has a lot of negative user reviews the last time I checked and is still a good unit.

I don't let user reviews bear a whole lot of weight unless the unit is suspiciously crap and doesn't appear to have professional reviews.

I have a hard time believing that sites can't afford $23 to test a major manufacturer's PSU.

That’s two weeks worth of testing for an in depth review, without being paid (by the brand at least).

Reputable reviewers don't get paid by the brand.  That's a huge conflict of interest.  They make money off of site visits.

I don't know  crap units man.  Evga released some pretty affordable 750w unit though...That's probably better than what I even have.

Also keep in mind that shitty power supplies can also damage the load test equipment when they fail.   Just like how a shitty power supply can kill your PC parts. It's just not worth it.

Maybe, but affordable 750W units don't make any sense.

Because when you have the money for a system that is around 600-700W real power consumption, you have the money for a good 750W PSU.

Easy as that.

Because with normal mid range Components we are talking about a good 400-450W PSU.

And also 400/450W in good quality are most likely cheaper than so so 750W units...

The one exception I would say to that is older dual socket systems (esp with old x80 cards), you can often get them for cheap and they can draw some serious watts...

I'm swapping the case on an Optiplex 790 DT and I'll need an ATX PSU.  What's something that's even a little bit better than an H250AD-00 model?  It needs to be 450W or greater (technically 400, but I want a little headroom), have a 24-pin motherboard connector, and two PCIe 6 pins.  Even if it's just marginally better I'm cool with it, because the way I see it I'm still upgrading for the buyer.  I just want it to be inexpensive.

So you are getting rid of the non-standard Optiplex power supply and putting everything into a standard ATX case?

Yes. Even if it was a standard ATX, it's only 250 watts.

Edit: Wtf happened? I did a quote and inserted it into my first post, but it created two.

Start a new thread instead of tacking your problem to this ongoing discussion about the tier list.

That's just my suggestion.

If this were over on my site, I would have had a mod peel your posts off into their own thread.

This is follow up on a previous discussion in this thread (which sprung from the appropriate tier of an unrated PSU) and I was told to post the model of the PSU when I got it.

Your contribution was jumping in the middle of a conversation to say how you think this forum should be run. So very helpful.

Can you take a photo of the side where the power cable goes? What we need to know is whether your PSU has standard TFX mounting holes in which case you can buy a TFX PSU for it and be fine.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Ah, I didn't realize that.  That's an eBay photo.  I won't get it until Thursday since it's apparently the slowest US shipping ever.  Do these pictures help?  If not, I'll just post in a week.

Edit: I've already ordered a new case, if you're talking about keeping the old case.  A GPU wouldn't fit in that case and it was just hella beat up based on the pictures.
