Steam Machine Unveiled.

CTRL+ALT+DEL a mistake… like actually

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/60003-bill-gates-admits-control-alt-delete-was-a-mistake-blames-ibm/

The functionality could have been on a single button but the guy that designed the IBM Keyboard didn’t want to give them a single button

First World Problem

What would have happened to the iconic ctrl+alt+del if it wasn’t for that? Would people care

EU wants all smartphones/tablets to be micro-usb AKA Linus gets to be mad again

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/60286-eu-wants-every-smartphone-and-tablet-to-charge-by-micro-usb/#

"We urge member states and manufacturers finally to introduce a universal charger, to put an end to cable chaos for mobile phones and tablet computers"

said Barbara Weiler. Should the proposed amendment eventually become law, hardware manufacturers would be required to ensure compatibility with a designated universal charger.

Parents. Drive your kids from minecraft for it is a demon.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/09/now-weve-heard-it-all-minecraft-blamed-in-school-violence-case/

“They use hammers to dig and knives and guns to protect themselves from zombies” Now I haven't played in a while but im pretty sure you dig with a shovel, mine with a pickaxe… and defend yourself with a sword and a bow.

unloaded handgun, a magazine with six bullets inside, a steak knife and a small-handled sledge hammer

Firing pin had been removed from the gun, kid still knew where to get it and the ammo though...

I expect this from stuff like GTA or any new shooter and my response is usually why the heck is your little kid playing this game? But with minecraft…? Grow up… they have read way worse in books and seen things WAY worse in media...

First Steam Machine annoucement. I guess valve can’t really stop people from doing this as they are offering the OS for free?

Shows an image of a guy with this thing in his backpack walking around with an oculus on but then doesn't reference any battery life

Claims it takes less u than a standard light bulb. If it does… I’d love to pack a backpack full of batteries and wire it up to this guy and walk around with an oculus on… imagine that + a lasertag arena and virtual enemies! Just have the lasertag arena recreated in unity or something

EU to be rid of inter EU roaming charges

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24056369

kinda old now but didn’t talk about it before.

Under the plans, companies would be banned from charging for incoming calls from July 2014. All other roaming charges would be scrapped by 2016.

Customers should also have the right to walk away from contracts if they are not given the internet speeds promised in their contracts.

But under the new proposals, companies will need one authorisation to operate in all countries, rather than 28 separate ones.

-massive consolidation of providers to stay competitive

- amazing. wish to see the same thing in Canada/US

- in some ways the EU is ridiculous, but when it comes to protecting consumer rights… :)

Silk road was a “dark net” onion site that facilitated drug sales like ebay using bitcoin

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/03/nyregion/operator-of-online-market-for-illegal-drugs-is-charged-fbi-says.html?_r=0

linked a personal email account to early versions of it

His final mistake, according to the court papers, was ordering fake identification documents from a Silk Road vendor from Canada. One of the nine documents was a California driver's license with Ulbricht's photograph, birthdate but a different name. The package was intercepted at the border during a routine U.S. Customs search.

For someone shrouded in darkness he left a lot of trails

146k unique buyer accounts.

There were 9 MILLION bitcoins worth of transactions that passed through the system over time.

Asked fake FBI hitmen to kill people twice, also tried to buy a KG of coke from them

*elric topic* Cheating in android benchmarks… a callout

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7384/state-of-cheating-in-android-benchmarks

We already knew this deep down but now we have evidence

Kinda haunting how much a small difference can impact benchmarks like these

Props to the companies NOT screwing around

Do we need to start doing real world performance benchmarks on phones/tablets as well?

These types of things are not a small part of why we switched to manually playing games to benchmark things… This is not all that different from PC

They also just recently patented the steam logo in EU…

Is this just a hype machine for their recent announcements?

Qualcomm claims apples 64 bit cpu is a marketing gimmick

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/62025-qualcomm-apples-64-bit-cpu-is-a-marketing-gimmick

How could early adoption be a bad thing? Would they not just be even more ready for the future?

They’re right… JUST 64 bit isnt the reason for the better benchmarks… the better CPU in general is

We are going to pass the ram limits of 32 bit VERY soon, i’d like to avoid all the problems we had on the PC side

Says it doesn’t matter… yet Samsung and Nvidia already on board the 64 bit train

“The chip maker ultimately will deliver a 64-bit mobile chip, but sees the move as more beneficial from engineering, chip design and OSes standpoints.” Not benchmarks… Thats fine imo, I didn’t expect that to be a thing

iPhone controllers leak out from Logitech

http://atomicfiction.com/cloud/ (This isn’t techniaclly news but this is a VFX company impletmenting a cloud based rendering system. Which is something companies like Adobe should offer as a product/service) This is the blog post where I found the company http://prolost.com/cookingcloud

would it be possible for you guys to do a comparison of the two?

i7 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819116900 is $309

the xeon http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819116906 is $254.

not OFFICIALLY supported by some board manu’s

no iGPU if the official part name ends in a 0

bCLK overclocking only

does NOT NEED ECC memory but can use it

does NOT NEED a xeon board, i’ve never heard of it not working on a standard board of the right socket

iPhone 5 sensors fail

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/62250-iphone-5s-sensors-providing-inaccurate-readings-for-some/

all devices running iOS 7 so it is probably not software

compared to an iPhone 5 and iPhone 4s

5s unit’s level was reading 2-3 degrees off the 5 and 4S, which also proved to be troublesome for games that rely on the gyroscope, like driving games, for motion controls

compass, measuring around 8-10 degrees different than the iPhone 5

as well as the accelerometer, which Gizmodo says “is registering way more latent motion.”

Adobe Creative Cloud Hacked

http://nofilmschool.com/2013/10/adobe-hacked-2-9-million-password-credit-debit/?utm_campaign=twitter&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitter (Adobe Creative Cloud got hacked)

Resetting relevant accounts and emailing those users that were effected

Any account that you have for anything that has a CC or something you care deeply for(an MMO gaming account or something of the sort) should have a unique password and/or two-step verification

Banks have already been notified

Federal law enforcement has been brought in already

Interesting target… Likely a lot of big groups with big credit cards with high caps that happen to have a lot of random purchases

On the topic of Silk Road closing, their was an initial drop in price of Bitcoin from $140 to 110, only 22%. Although one skipped bit of detail is how quickly it recovered. The moments before the bust of silk road the price of Bitcoin was $140 As of posting this right now only a couple days later, the price is $137 on MT.Gox. Some other exchanges had smaller fluctuations, some had higher. A lot less than made out in the stream ;)

The bust of Silk Road will bring Bitcoin further towards a more legitimate view among a wider audience as it shows there is still value outside of black markets. Many narrow minded views quickly draw conclusions that the cryptocurrency is directly tied and supported only by the black market with no real world practicalities.

If anyone has questions, or looking for info regarding Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies, head over to the  Folding@home, Boinc, and Coin Mining section of the forums.

https://linustechtips.com/main/forum/37-foldinghome-boinc-and-coin-mining/

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Users cannot, and will not securely manage key material. Most users can't and the ones that can, wont.

Ask me about Bitcoin, Litecoin, Crypto-Currencies, and/or Mining them.
