Keep GTX 970 or upgrade to GTX 1070?

Nick92

Hi all,

Here's my system specs:

i7 6700 (non-k)

MSI H170A Gaming Pro Motherboard

MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4GB

Corsair Vengeance 16GB

SSD Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

Seasonic S12II 620W

Monitor: LG 24GM77 144Hz

I usually play esport games like Dota 2, CSGO, etc..., rarely play AAA games (don't have time for these). Does my rig need to be upgraded and will it handle for 2-3 more years? I just work and play games in 1080p only, I will consider to get 1440p in the future.

Please give me some of your recommendations. Thanks! :)

if you only play esport games there's little reason to buy a 1070.. maybe consider the 1060

for those games a 970 is more than enough. once you will upgrade to 1440p consider a 1070 again

I just came from a 1080p+GTX970 setup then recently upgraded monitor to 1440p.
Well as of my experience the 3.5+0.5GB Vram really affects perf @ 1440p.

So if you consider on getting a 1440p monitor then you might as well buy the 1070.

@all: Thanks for your replies. But the thing is i'm using a 144Hz monitor, means that more things for 970 to process, and games these days require more powerful GPU. I know I'm a bit greedy but I want everything to be smooth in gaming and working. :)

Grab a 1070. 970 can't really do 1440p properly

I mean, if you play CSGO all of those Pro players usually put it on Very low settings so it doesn't matter. and Dota it doesn't have the best graphic in the market so no problem there. So yeah, keep it.

If you want to spend money on a new GPU, either take the 980Ti which sometimes is able for the price of under 400€ or take the 1070 which is more power efficient and costs about 500€. (At least where I live - Germany)

The 980Ti is about the performance of a 1080 FE so it would be a good deal, if you could get it at least 100€ less than the 1070.

You decide.

The 970 is right around the 10th best card you can get. There really isn't much incentive to upgrade to the 1070 from a 970. Until 4K games can be played @60fps or more, there is not much of a point to upgrade from generation to generation of graphics cards. If you had a 760 or older card, upgrading to a 1070 would make sense. I get over 100fps @1080p on BF4 type graphics games with my 970. Project Cars 110-120fps. It's still a very good card.

Just keep your card. If you want better framerates, lower the settings.

You'll want to buy a new gpu when your current gpu can't handle the games you played at the setting you want.

He fucking said he only plays Mobas. How about you actually read the OP before telling people to shell out £400 for no reason?

A 960 can play these games at 4K, a 970 will handle 1440p fine.

Pretty sure a 960 wont run this games at 4k. Guess you made a typing error.

No I didn't. It's not difficult to run League of Legends, Dota 2, CS:GO at 4K. Linus made a video of this with a 285, which is about the same level of performance as a 960.

Ultimately you should upgrade your GPU whenever you feel that it is no longer capable of delivering the framerates you want at the settings you'd like in the games that you play. Not because some 12 year old on the Internet who has no concept of money tells you to.

If I seem grumpy, it's because this kind of thing irritates me. This is why PC Gaming is really off-putting to people and has a reputation for being ridiculously expensive. Because people are recommending a GPU that costs nearly double the price of a console for playing fucking Mobas and Arena Shooters.

Wow, these are some of the worst responses I've ever seen. They didn't even read the post.

@Nick92keep your 970. There are zero reasons to upgrade if your mostly play e sport games that can be run on a potato and your 970 is still fine for AAA games.

@all: thanks for all of your replies. Last question I want to ask is that how long can 970 handle?

What you mean is how long will your current system last without being to hold it's own on games (60fps). At least 2-3 years easily with the caliber of games you are playing 4 or 5 years. When people talk 1440p and 4K gaming, a different story but your 970 could easily run CS:GO at 144op and 4K easily with 60+ fps. I get 300fps (max fps CS:GO counter) with my 970 playing CS:GO @ 1080P.
