Gtx 1080 enough to run 3440x1440

Would a single GTX 1080 be enought to run an Acer X34 or Asus PG348Q? I thought it would be but after looking at some benchmarks unless your playing Battlefield you only get about 60-75 fps. So would it be better to just get a 1440p monitor.

it should do well you can't max out the game but there are some settings at 1440p that you don't need to crank

It depends on your needs. Do you really need a monitor like that if you're just gaming? Just get a 1440p monitor, unless you're a content creator, then you could benefit from 3440x1440 and 1080 would run it pretty well.

1440p sure, but 3440x1440 is a little bit bigger, it's like 1440p but ultrawide.

really depends on games. i dont think u will be able to get 100 fps on dat sexy X34 with 100 Hz refresh rate at Ultra settings, for example on Crysis 3.

but if u lower some of the settings i dont think you will face any problem with syncing fps and refresh rate with that monster 1080 :D

Answers like this are quite frequent and make me hate this forum sometimes. Needs have nothing to do with the question. He has the money to do something and wants to know if it will work.

At the end of the post, he asked if it would just be better to get a 1440p monitor, that's why my answer looked like this.

  • 2 weeks later...

A single 1080 can push some games on max settings @3440x1440, but if it's a demanding game you're probably looking at 60-80 fps average. Some games are still getting 55-75 fps @2560x1440. If you want consistent 100+ fps and maxed settings at either resolution you might want to look into an SLI build; if you do, 2x 1070's would definitely do the job. I have 2 OCed 980ti classifieds in SLI with a 144hz 2560x1440 Asus gsync monitor and I get 144+ fps on most any game maxed out, and 1070's are better than 980ti's for less money. The high bandwidth SLI used in Pascal scales better than traditional SLI as well. But If you're uncomfortable with SLI, or content with lowering your graphics settings and turning off AA/other settings, I'm sure you could consistently get 100fps at either resolution in the many games with a single 1080, especially if you OC. Plus the Pascal drivers are in their infancy, so I expect there's still some performance to be gained from optimization over time. Here's a link to some benchmarks if you're interested: http://techgage.com/article/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-review-a-look-at-1440p-4k-ultra-wide-gaming/2/

Even though the review in the link is for the 1070, 1080 benchmarks are included for multiple games @4k, 3440x1440, and 2560x1440

EDIT: Forgot to answer your question about monitors. If you've got the budget, get the monitor you want; a 1080 will do definitely do the job but if it doesn't perform to your liking, you can always add a second card down the road. I personally like 2560x1440 for the 144hz in FPS games. Some games also don't have native support for 21:9 aspect ratio, and you'll end up rendering those games @2560x1440 with a 440x1440 blank area on each side of the rendering.
