VRM, or Voltage Regulator Module, as its name would suggest, is the part that regulates the voltage for the most important components, such as CPUs and GPUs.

Yes and No the 9900k is a serious CPU that is putting that boards VRM's at a very high temp which can lead to instability with overclocking. You might need more voltage and to play around with BIOS settings to find a good spot on that board for your cpu. It will need more voltage than other boards for z390. Also airflow over the vrm heatsinks will help with temps on it.

I see this makes sense ! I tried using the automatic settings for overclocking where the board checks the capabilities of your cpu and cooling and overclocks accordingly  but even then i got bluescreens. Quite weird. I'm fine with being at stock settings... i got a cinebench score of 2060 ish but it would be nice to get the full potential of the cpu. I wouldn't want to put it on the line by upping the voltages without having decent know how about it though.

Broke my locked i7 8700 record results, in case any wanna compare how does the cheaper locked i7 8700 stacks up against overclocking the Ryzen 5 2600/2600X.

 

Things done were 102.98mhz BCLK overclock the highest it'd go before Intel Management Engine prevents booting, turned off all power limit features in BIOS OFF, cooling the 65w TDP chip is a modest Hyper 212X and memory went from the XMP of 3200mhz 16 18 18 38 up to nearly 3300mhz 16 17 17 37 after a quick tuning.

 

CPU voltage at full utilization caps at 1.29v.

 

Messing around enough to go from the usual stock multi core of 1334 points all the way up to 1415, with 192 single core... not bad at all, manages to keep up pace with the 1080 Ti for gaming just fine.

 

If the chart could be updated from the stock result to this latest tweaked result that'd be awesome.

 

 

Now I should probably start playing around with the i9 when my brother lets me

I have the same mb and cpu, just finished up getting OC tweaks to hit 99th on Timespy 1 gpu HoF. 

You may want to update the BIOS, the latest one does not have that silicon quality value at all. 

 

Anyway, 5.3 ghz at 1.375v and LLC level 7 are stable for me. I'll post up screenshots tomorrow but that got a cb score of about 2300 i believe.

It took me 1.44v to get that, although i didnt mess around with LLC, how do you cool it?

Alphacool crossflow 420mm radiator with 3x Noctua iPPC NF-A14 2000rpm pwm fans. Define R6 case, 4 more of those fans as intake. 

 

LLC really helped, definitely look into it. I'm going to try dropping core voltage to see if i can get temps down a bit.

I don't have any screens, but I was helping my Dad setup his new HP Desktop today and wanted him to see the difference between his new and old PC so I ran Cinebench on em both.  

 

Old HP with an i5 2500S -- 331 points

New HP with an i7 8700 -- 1300 and some change points

 

He was quite pleased to see that.

 

And in case anyone asks why I didn't build his PC for him -- he was slightly interested in the idea, but HP had a great deal on an 8700 with a 1tb and 16GB Optane and 12 GB of 2666MHz RAM.  It was $679 and with an i7 8700 costing $300 alone it seemed like a great deal.  Only problem is the thing thermal throttles during Cinebench runs so I might have to explore some better cooling solutions for him.  I'm also gonna pull that Optane stick and replace it with a 1tb m.2 860 EVO for him if that Optane drive doesn't feel fast enough for him.

I've had major OC problems, on z370 (high end with 10 power phase design (MSI Gaming M5)) and I've tried to OC different ways, like expert mode and simple mode. Can't seem to be able to OC anything in expert mode might be because i do some settings wrong o BIOS is outdated (im not sure hwat all V settings are and how much aproximately they should be so leave all at Auto except the Core clock which i apply to all cores as fixed). And Now im running stock as  thought i had stable 5.0GHz all core (with that high voltage) but apperantly its not stable as when i isnstalled a GTX1080Ti it began crashing very rarely but enough for me to go back to stock. Is there any in-dept OC turorials for i9-9900K on Z370? Ive OC a lot before on my previous i7-8700K and i5-3570K but I seemt to struggle to "OC" to stock speeds even. Leading me to believe i do somehing wrong in Bios in expert more or Bios update required. Already updated bios to support the i9.

What settings do you use and how do you OC yours to achive such low voltage (did you test with IntelBurnTest, Prime95 and Realbench?)
