You're using different context.

 

Yes, civilians are killed in the middle east by drones. But they are not the target of the drones (Unless you believe in conspiracies). That is an active war zone. Those people who are killed innocently are collateral damage. As sad and terrible as collateral damage is, it's a fact of life, and has been a fact of war since the dawn of mankind.

 

Think about how many civilians were killed during WW2, or Vietnam, or The Great War, or the Napoleonic Wars. Civilian collateral damage is not something new. It's sad and should be avoided if possible, but it's nothing new at all.

 

This is the first time that domestic police forces have used a drone to kill civilians, in a non-war-zone. Context matters.

 

Is it a sad day? Perhaps, yes. But I do not feel as bad about this as I do about civilians being killed in collateral damage. This man was an active shooter, killing and endangering innocent lives. He was killed by a robot that was being operated by a human (thus, no AI). Realistically, it was no different then that human pulling a trigger on a gun. No innocent civilian lives were risked in this robot attack. There was zero collateral damage (Aside from whatever physical damage the room he was in might have sustained).

 

Could this type of scenario be abused? Hell yeah. But Police Forces all across North America have had the capabilities to do this for decades. It might become more common now that there is a precedence, but they've had the equipment to do so for quite some time.

 

In this very specific context, I'm okay with the fact that they used a remotely controlled robot to kill an armed and active shooter, at no loss of innocent life.

The idea is that here the civilian was the intended target.  Civilian deaths resulting from robots is surely nothing new but until now, it hasn't been the intention.

I don't really see what the big deal is.  Or how it differs from using a long range rifle.  The police assessed the situation as too dangerous to send in men, but also that the situation needed to end quickly.  It was decided the best resolution for the situation was to kill the suspect and end things quickly and prevent escalation.  Why does the means even matter?  While I understand this specific tool used this specific way is a "new" thing for the Police to do, its hardly a new thing by result.  It is basically just a fancy RC car with a small bomb on it.  Honestly, as long as there is a person pressing the button or pulling the trigger, I don't see it as any different than using a gun.

 

While it could be argued that modern tech gamifies war/killing by putting the user behind a screen in complete safety, it doesn't really matter to me.  We have people on the police that are more than willing and capable of committing blatant murder, laughing about it, going home to tuck in their children and they still sleep just fine at night.  Besides, there has to be a first time for everything.  And in a few short years, it will be normal and you will have trouble remembering what it was like before, for better or worse, approve or disapprove.

I... honestly dont see what's the problem with this. They could just as well strap the C4 or whatever with a remote detonator into a remote controlled car and drive it in and detonate it, and suddenly the whole "robot" will be taken out of the story and all we have is a "killer toy". These "robot" is still manually controlled, it's no different from the cop use a gun to shoot the suspect himself. He still have control of it, it just that this way is less dangerous to the cop. 

It will be a whole different things if an AI control the robot or make that decision, but for now... this seem perfectly ok to me.

I think what makes this story seem so strange/shocking/different at first* is that it's a method that hasn't been used by police before.  It's a different method, and it's a very detached method.  Typically police are much more "hands on".  * I say as first because I think once you think about it for a bit, it's not so odd.  Ultimately, they decided someone needed to be killed, and they killed them.  Does it matter if it's a bomb strapped to a robot or a gun?  Probably not.  That's my theory on why this makes the news :)

While that might work in a country with extremely strong gun control laws, where your regular citizen doesn't have a gun, nor do they carry one around for self defence.

 

But that would never work in America. Some dude tries to mug you with a knife, and you shoot him in self defence (legal in the US), you'd be "disintegrated"? I think the gun carrying population of the US would like that even less than gun control laws :P

 

Not to mention that it's basically a fantasy. What technology exists to make that even remotely feasible or practical?
