MIT Research Shows the Hole in the Ozone Layer Might be Healing

Source 3: http://news.mit.edu/2016/signs-healing-antarctic-ozone-layer-0630

  • Scientists at MIT and elsewhere have identified signs of healing of the Antarctic ozone layer

    • Findings published earlier this week in the journal Science by Susan Solomon

  • Team found that the September ozone hole has shrunk more than 4 million square kilometers

    • About half the area of the United States

    • Since 2000, when ozone depletion was at its peak

  • Team also showed that recovery has slowed somewhat at times

    • Due to effects of volcanic eruptions year to year

  • Authors used “fingerprints” of the ozone changes with season and altitude to attribute the ozone’s recovery to decline of atmospheric chlorine originating from chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

    • Chemical compounds were once emitted by dry cleaning processes, old refrigerators, and aerosols such as hairsprays

    • In 1987 virtually every country in the world signed on to the Montreal Protocol to ban the use of CFCs and repair the ozone hole

  • Researchers tracked the yearly opening of the Antarctic ozone hole in the month of September, from 2000 to 2015

    • Analyzed ozone measurements taken from weather balloons and satellites

    • As well as satellite measurements of sulfur dioxide emitted by volcanoes

    • Also tracked meteorological changes

      • Such as temperature and wind, which can shift the ozone hole back and forth

  • Solomon sees no reason, barring future volcanic eruptions, that the ozone hole shouldn’t shrink and eventually close permanently by midcentury

  • YouTubers Tom Syndicate and TmarTn were promoting their own CS:GO skin gambling site in videos and not disclosing the fact that they were owners of that site

    • In the first CSGO Lotto video that Tmartn posted, he said that “we found this new site called CSGO Lotto”, lying to his viewers

    • Encouraged his viewership to go check it out, and that he won a pot and it was the “coolest feeling ever”

  • Both YouTubers had strings of videos on their channels where they gambled CSGO skins through their website

  • Jun 27th, YouTuber “HonorTheTruth” reported that TmarTn and Syndicate actually own the company CSGO Lotto

    • Tmartn replied with a video informing his audience that it’s “never been a secret,” and originally claimed that he was offered an equity stake after he had already been sponsored by the company

      • The company documents show that he was the one that incorporated the company, so that is completely false

    • Said he claimed it in every video that he had uploaded

      • H3H3 found that TmarTn tried to go back to his older videos and put disclaimers in the video descriptions after the fact

    • This video has since been removed

    • Ownership of the company wasn’t noted on Tmartn’s LinkedIn, while his other business ventures are

  • Jul 3rd, H3H3 Productions covered it and the story blew up

  • Jul 4th, Tmartn deleted all of his videos revolving around CSGO Lotto

  • A second lawsuit has been filed against Valve since this issue came to light, with CS:GO lotto listed as a defendant

  • Jul 7th - TmarTn has gone dark and his lawyers have stated that there will be no further comment, and that they will make their next comments in the courtroom

  • Separate story, but related - on July 4th, YouTuber named Psisyndicate created a video where he admits that two of his  videos from company “Steamloto” were rigged

    • Was paid via skins to rig the lottery and win some highly valued CSGO skins

    • Totalbiscuit commented on the video “You people are a fucking embarrassment to our industry”

In America Sharing Your Password is Now a Federal Crime!

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/622815-in-america-sha OP: Master Disaster

Source 2: motherboard.vice.com/password-sharing-is...

  • Result of a decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, one of the most powerful appeals courts in the US

  • Any user sharing a password that has not been authorized by the host of the website is in breach of the CFAA (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act) in the US

  • Conviction of David Nosal, former employee of Korn/Ferry International (a research firm) was upheld

  • Nosal used a former coworker’s password to access one of the firm’s databases after his employment was terminated, which was declared as “unauthorized” use of a computer system under the CFAA

  • Judge Margaret McKeown argues that “without authorization” in the CFAA is “an unambiguous, non-technical term that, given its plain and ordinary meaning, means accessing a protected computer without permission.”

  • She then proceeded to argue that, though Nosal DID have authorization from the other employee, he did not have authorization from the firm, which is why he is in breach of the CFAA

  • Civil liberties groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and legal scholars, as well as the dissenting judge in the 2-1 decision, are arguing that this wording is too vague, and are now asking the question “Authorization from who?”

  • They argue that this sets a dangerous precedent for everyday citizens who share passwords for services like Netflix and HBO Go with friends and family members

  • Since they do not have authorization from those companies to share these passwords, they are breaking federal law under the CFAA

  • They are primarily concerned with what they call “the government’s boundless interpretation of the CFAA.”

  • “The majority does not provide, nor do I see, a workable line which separates the consensual password sharing in this case from the consensual password sharing of millions of legitimate account holders, which may also be contrary to the policies of system owners,” wrote dissenting judge Stephen Reinhardt

  • He also says that this decision “loses sight of the anti-hacking purpose of the CFAA.”

  • “Using someone else’s password with their permission but not the system’s owner isn’t ‘hacking,’ but that’s what the court is treating it as.”

  • Reinhardt also noted that all 50 states have their own more narrow computer trespassing statutes, and that the case would have been better suited for civil, not criminal proceedings

  • Unless Netflix or HBO start to pursue individual customers, this probably means nothing, but it sets a precedent that users who share passwords in the US should consider

    • As part of a manifesto signed by the heads of BT, Deutsche Telecom, Telecom Italia and Vodafone, among others

  • As quid pro quo for more investment, controversial new EU rules on net neutrality should be watered down

    • According to the document signed by 17 different telecoms groups and seen by financial times

    • “Policies and rules must be future-oriented, pro-investment and pro-innovation” the manifesto reads

    • The telecom Industry warns that the current Net Neutrality guidelines, as put forward by BEREC, create significant uncertainties around 5G return on investment. Investments are therefore likely to be delayed unless regulators take a positive stance on innovation and stick to it.”

  • Telecoms industry also demanded regulatory “level playing field” by placing communication tools such as Whatsapp and Skype under the same rules as them

Source 1: finance.yahoo.com/consumer-reports-samsung…

  • Consumer Reports

  • Appears to be limited to the Active (the more “rugged” model)

He said something like Joel.

D is not silent.

E is not silent.

I understand something like 'Jole', which is how I assumed it was pronounced too. So it should be something more like "Djolay" (in terms of pronunciation)?

There we go. It should be something like that.

Although we have a little bit softer "Dj" (it's actually supposed to be a Đ but we don't want to pay for non-ASCII chars xD). It's a mix of D as in dentist and J as in year. Just say those two quickly and you have formed a Đ. Hope I helped.

Regarding the employee sharing his login credentials with a former employee, we've got there a law for this for ages.

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A ATTORNEY! IF IN DOUBT ASK A REAL ATTORNEY!

§ 202a StGB1 ("Strafgesetzbuch" - "German Criminal Code") reads

Spoiler
Quote

Translation into english2

Quote

Section 202a - Data espionage

(1) Whosoever unlawfully obtains data for himself or another that were not intended for him and were especially protected[3] against unauthorised access, if he has circumvented the protection, shall be liable to imprisonment not exceeding three years or a fine.

(2) Within the meaning of subsection (1) above data shall only be those stored or transmitted electronically or magnetically or otherwise in a manner not immediately perceivable.

That means, in the case shown here, both could be put in prison for up to three years, as the former employee gains access to protected data he's not supposed to see and the one sharing his account for giving someone access to data no one outside of the company is supposed to see.

There are more laws regarding IT-crime (§ 202b StGB and § 202c StGB, maybe more) and (at least) one regarding publishing leaked documents (read: leaking documents to investigative journalists4, § 202d), which have their flaws, as e. g. § 202c prohibits the creation of exploits for any usecase, no differentiation between pentests (should be legal, but isn't clearly defined) and cracking5 (should and is illegal).

Sorry for the long post

  3. I think "somehow protected" transfers the meaning better, as anything triggering an authorisation request that's working unless you're messing with it (read: works unless you run exploits against it), is "special protection", according to all judgings I can think of top of my head
  4. A case was opened against investigative journalists and their sources last summer, (Netzpolitik.org-Affair, started with: https://netzpolitik.org/2015/suspicion-of-treason-federal-attorney-general-announces-investigation-against-us-in-addition-to-our-sources/

  5. I delibreately did not write hacker, as I define hacker as Wau Holland (founder of the CCC) did:
    Quote

Ein Hacker ist jemand, der versucht einen Weg zu finden, wie man mit einer Kaffeemaschine Toast zubereiten kann

English (I tried): "A hacker is someone trying to find a way to make toast with a coffee machine"

Please excuse my English, I'm a native German speaker.

I was really close to getting the G5 until I heard about the restrictions they were going to have or the modular devices. They made it nearly impossible for other companies to make modules for it. They raised the amount of investment needed to get into it, and also requires approval from the company to get to the next step of development. That causes unnecessary delay, cost, and potential rejection of ideas or modules that can actually be popular (e.g., the company that originally rejected Led Zeppelin missed out on a band that became mildly popular).

They shot them self in the foot, going modular, carries some downsides, but as seen with other established modular products, the benefits of the modularity so far outweighs the downsides, then no one worries about it. LG kept all of the cons, and restricted all of the pros, except the user replaceable battery.
