Compact VR mini-ITX build

The goal of this is to have a compact mid to upper end VR system to make it easier to move around, as I hope to take it to places with more space than I have at home. I barely have the minimum space for room scale.

 

I went for the Silverstone Sugo SG13 as the best balance between size and what you can fit in it. The component size limitations is certainly something I can't ignore and this is particularly a limitation on the GPU length.

 

Things I already have/will steal from other systems:

Asus 980Ti reference blower - should just fit in the SG13. I will probably replace this with a 1070 once smaller sized ones are available, like the Gigabyte in recent news.

2x4GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000

i7-6700k

Corsair CX450M - I was almost going to use the Fractal Edison M 450 from the same system the above came from, but it is slightly too long. Luckily I had the shorter CXM in another system and just swapped them over.

256GB Samsung PM951 - I'm no longer a believer in paying much more for higher performing SSDs since I can't notice it outside of benchmarks, and this one offered a good price/capacity ratio in M.2 format. If I start running low on space I could add 2.5" SSDs later, but there aren't that many VR games, yet.

I get a free copy of Doom with the mobo too.

All the parts... well, not quite. I almost binned the M.2 SSD as it was hidden in a ball of bubble wrap.

Mobo, cooler and GPU fitted. I didn't realise at the time, but I probably should have done the front panel connections before this point as they were a pain to reach under the tubing at this stage.

Tight? The GPU sticks slightly out of the front, but it is ok. The 120mm rad is fitted. Holes are provided for 140mm but it would need a shorter GPU. Note the screw holes on the bottom which I think are for a 2.5" SSD.

PSU now added in place, as well as the panel at the top that holds 2.5" drives. I kinda gave up on tidy cabling by this point and just shoved it where there was any space for it to go.

I had two decisions to make, and I'm not sure if I picked the right ones. Note I picked the version of this case with the brushed aluminium style front panel, not the mesh, so airflow might not be as good. I chose to make the rad fan intake, and the PSU fan up to get fresh air. My concern with this is temps inside might get rather warm with the CPU dumping all the heat in there and little movement out... if that is the case I'll probably reverse the rad fan.

 

OS install is slightly delayed as for some stupid reason the USB stick was US English, where I really want English English, so that's going on in the background now.

Got Windows installed on it now, and running AIDA64 stress test for starters.

 

With stress test set to FPU + cache (which I know runs pretty hot), hottest core hit 95C. I note the mobo is applying 1.36v which I know is excessive for this CPU at 4.0 GHz, so I'll have to reduce it in a moment.

 

By chance I put the pump on the CPU header and that reports around 2550 rpm, and under load the fan on the rad goes to 2400 rpm, compared to just under 2000 at idle. I can't hear the fan at idle, but I should note the system is right next to a folding test box with panel open and that is kinda noisy too. At 2400rpm the fan noise becomes really obvious.

CPU now set to 1.25V. Hottest core now hitting 79C, so massive improvement there. Fan also only sitting around 2300 at that temp. Strangely I couldn't boot when setting XMP mode, will need to look into that.

Wont boot at XMP 3000 settings (what the ram is rated at), will boot at 2800. I know for sure that the ram works ok at 3000 as it has done for a long time in the system I pulled it from.

 

I know some board+ram combos can be a bit picky with SA/IO voltages but I'm not in the mood to fiddle with it. Going to swap in some Crucial 2666 instead and see how that fares.

I've left the Corsair ram running at 2133 for now. I tried to take it out but... it isn't happening in a hurry!

 

Still, did a quick SteamVR benchmark, dropping to 10.4 due to the GPU thermally throttling.

 

Gonna be away for a couple days now, so will then try swapping the rad fan direction, flip the PSU and swap the ram. Almost a total rebuild...

I'd say the effective cooler area is comparable or even less than a Hyper 212 which I'd also expect to reach 70's in this type of test. Note the FPU stress condition which is hotter than CPU stress, I'd need more data to say this was excessive.

 

Also note the cooler as standard comes with two fans for push-pull operation, but there is no room for that in this case so I'm using a single fan. If there might be a better fan for this use case, I'd consider it.

I've done some more testing. The heat problem is due to the case. There simple isn't enough room between the rad and the front of the case. As a test, I started Prime95 small FFT test, and that stabilised around 89C. With it still running, I took off the front section of the case, and temps dropped to an average of about 78C.

 

I would add, I arguably picked the wrong version of the case here. There are two versions of the SG13, ignoring colour variations. One has a mesh front, which I thought was a bit ugly, and the one I got has an aluminium effect panel. Guess what the airflow is like with a solid panel? If I had got the mesh one, it would likely have been ok.

 

So now I'm left wondering what to do... could I modify the case front for airflow? But that would likely ruin the reason I got it for in the first place: looks. Also it doesn't look obvious to me if there is any way to remove the solid panel to retrofit a mesh. As the case is low cost, another option is simply to buy another one in mesh version and swap it over. And I'll have yet another spare case to put in the pile... not saying never, but I've no more plans for a mini-ITX build, and if I were, it would have to be a low power one to avoid a repeat.

 

The final option... do nothing. Gaming is less intensive than Prime95, and it might be enough to get away with. I have to try some gaming on it later and see how that goes.

That processor should readily hit 4.3+Ghz without touching the voltage at all...

 

79C seems quite hot for liquid at only 4Ghz @ 1.25v

 

Concerned about the 450 watt power supply as well...  The 980 Ti alone can suck a lot of juice under max load (mine would sometimes spike up to almost 300 watts with only a pretty mild overclock), and you're OC'ing your processor as well...

In my experience with 2x 6700k + 1x 6600k, 4.2 is about the 1.25v stability zone (note all of these default to higher voltages at stock). 4.3 needs more voltage and I don't want to go there. I should add my definition of stability and stress is probably a lot more serious than many out there. Basically Prime95 is my starting point, and I also run applications that can get hotter than that 24/7.

I'm not at all surprised that this liquid cooler isn't doing that well temp wise, as it is only a single 120mm rad which isn't a lot compared to high end air. Water doesn't make the cooling magically better.

The 980ti is a temporary card until I find a smaller aftermarket 1070. Even if both CPU and GPU are maxed out I doubt I'd need more than 350W, and they're unlikely to be maxed out in that way anyway.

Strange, I regularly see them go up to 4.5 without any additional voltage.  Any particular reason why you're increasing voltage before you find out where that point is for this particular unit, btw?

I'm not increasing it, I'm decreasing it. Stock is higher.

I gave in an ordered the mesh front version of the SG13... it actually looks nicer in reality than the product photos as the pattern doesn't stand out that much. While taking it apart to swap the front panels, I decided to also reconfigure the fans on the Silverstone AIO. It came with two fans but somewhere it suggested only one would fit in the SG13. Well, I can confirm both fitted in there, although it was getting a bit tight. So that's now running push-pull through the mesh front. It has helped with noise and temps. Even running Prime95 small FFT, temps topped out around high 70's and the noise is better. Still nowhere near silent, but it is no longer a high pitched whine. The only snag with the push-pull is the two fans are different enough in speed there is a dissonance in the combined noise they make. I don't think there's any easy way around that.

 

I did notice the new case had a different lid, so they might have changed the design, or the two were always different. The mesh front one had a lip on the back of the case to give somewhere to pull to remove it, whereas the solid front one just had a flat back. I used the new one for a different reason: the older one kinda bent a bit where the newer one doesn't.

 

I also took the chance to actually bother setting the fan controllers, so the pump is always on full speed, and the fans are on the bios "quiet" setting. This is 20% PWM at low temps, ramping up with temps.

I've decided I can't stand the fan noise on the radiator after all. I know it'll impact cooling but I'm thinking of going back to one fan, and putting a resistor cable on it to lower the max speed. I might even make it fixed speed. I don't need absolute coolest possible temperatures, just cool enough.

 

I've also ordered Kingston 2x8GB dual rank 2666 ram. This is a balance of cost, speed and performance, which should give a bit of a boost from the 2666 single rank in there. I would go higher, but with the earlier problems running the Corsair 3000, I want to de-risk it. Dual rank 2666 should be faster than 3000 single rank for my uses.

 

I might also put a bigger SSD in addition to the system. I haven't filled the existing 256GB one yet, but I should allow for more gaming installs looking forward.

That's where i put one of my SSDs, along with a 3.5 HDD on top (above the front intake)

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion the build in its current state isn't viable for 24/7 CPU load running. I went down to a single fan on the rad, noise went down, temps went up. But neither are satisfactory.

 

I've kinda decided, realistically, the SG13 case just isn't going to do it long term. For a lower power CPU system, it would be adequate, but not a 6700k.

 

So, I've been hunting for alternate cases. I still have a Corsair 280mm AIO left over from a previous upgrade but finding ITX case to fit that isn't so simple. I'm leaning towards the NZXT Manta as least boring. Others on the shortlist were the Fractal Design Node 804 or Thermaltake Core X1, but in comparison to the Manta they're just too boring.

 

Obviously size is going up a LOT with this case size class. I've actually got smaller micro-ATX cases, but they're not pushing higher power.

I got the black/red Manta case now. It is nice, but really big and heavy especially for mini-ITX. To cut a story short, I fitted the Corsair H110i GTX and temps sucked with an excessive difference between coolest and hottest core. Checked and double checked mount and TIM application, which seemed fine. Put on Noctua D9L and temps were similar. There's no way it should be similar... I can only speculate there's excessive pressure from the tubing contributing to a bad mount, even though everything seems tight as can be.

 

I really do like the looks of the case... so much so, I'm now wondering if i should continue the colour theme of black and red. The mobo already has read/black features.

 

I fancy some of that plasma ram in recent videos, shown in red, but haven't found it for sale. Add some red cable extensions, should be nice. Then swap the fans for red LED ones... leaving only the nvidia logo on the GPU in green. I'll have to research how that is done, and if possible swap it over.
