Worth Upgrading to Skylake yet?

Currently on an i5-4670K, probably the oldest thing in my machine at the moment with the motherboard, everything else has gone through the upgrades. My question is, is it worth upgrading to a Skylake CPU yet or waiting it out for a little while? I am aware I would need to get a new motherboard and DDR4 to match.

Probably not, since you have a 4670k. Perhaps the next gen that comes out would be more of an upgrade.

I am in the same boat as you and I am waiting out until ZEN. It might be not much of an upgrade but it will certainly lower intel prices so you could upgrade then

Stick with your CPU for a while. One of my friends is still using a 2600k and it performs well.

I jumped to skylake from the 4790k and beside getting DDR4 I didn't notice a big jump in performance.

 

Do like my friend does, waits until his current PC's cpu is barely min spec for games, then finally upgrades. Don't be like me and end up with more PC parts than I need.

I am still on a Core i7 930, and I don't really see a reason to upgrade yet. I mean, sure, I'll enjoy UEFI, and NVMe on supported motherboards and all that, but while performance can always be improved an enjoyed from a newer CPU, I am not compelled to run and buy a new system as my "system is too slow" for software development, or gaming.

 

I might upgrade to Kaby Lake when it comes out, but that is just to get everything from the second gen Core i CPUs to Skylake plus, USB 3.1 support, hopefully better, more polished NVMe drives by then, and full and more polished UEFI support by then (I am on the old BIOS, now). And of course, performance increase. But like I said, I would wait.

 

It would be more cool if there was more than Quad core CPU. I doubt it will come on the mainstream models, but we never know. Maybe a miracle happens and AMD releases something good, making Intel move their ass.

More cores isn't a must.. I just said, it would be nice. I currently don't see value in getting an older chip, and way more expensive motherboard, and CPU just for 2 extra cores, not to mention more heat. But anyway, we will see when times comes, I am not hurry.

Well it wasn't more at the time... and considering at one point a 5820k (320 dollars) and a MSI X99A SLI PLUS (170 dollars) were again less than a comparable skylake system, it was kinda a win/win.

 

That said, the one generation behind is a bit of a drag wrt HEDT platform, but given the minimal differences expected from Skylake to Kaby Lake, Skylake-E might be a good start point.

I'm honestly wondering if Kaby is going to step up the core count with Zen offering so many.  Seeing things such as dual core celeron, dual core hyperthreaded pentium, quad core i3, quad core hyperthreaded i5 and six core hyperthreaded i7 with eight core plus for the extremes.
I don't think your current hardware is old enough to warrant upgrade now, but if you do, skylake doesn't look bad.  Perhaps waiting for the skylake-e and chipset for it would be the best upgrade path, otherwise the Z170 is the generational upgrade from Z97 chipset wise if you really need the features of it.

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.
