So, I'm confused.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a better GPU...

RX 480 or GTX 970?

Or another GPU that's good on a tight budget?

Just get whichever is the cheapest.

RX 480 is cheaper, and with drivers. Could get closer to a 980 or 980ti. Also aftermarket cards and OCing could help that too.

@wcreek @thony remember that the 970 is on a very mature driver, while the 480 is not, i expect that it will beat out 970 after a few driver updates

It will never be close to a 980 or 980ti. It barely beats the 970 in certain titles, with better aftermarket GPU's it'll beat it by a slightly larger margin, but lets not kid ourselves here- it'll never be that close to a 980 or 980ti.

With an after market cooler and another 6 pin the 480 would beat it all the time

Reference 480s are being compared to custom board 970s and they are trading blows. Once the custome boards for the 480 come out, which suppouse to OC alot better, and the drivers mature a bit it should mean the 480s will have a slight advantage.

What makes you think that? Optimization can always work wonders. DX12 and Vulkan also help too.

With a healthy 300 to 400MHz OC on an aftermarket card and driver optimizations, I don't think it'd be too far fetched to say that the RX 480 could throw some blows at Nvidia's cards of yesteryear. Which by today's standards are still pretty good.

According to reviews, the RX 480 performs ever so slightly worse (1-3 FPS) than the GTX 970, howerver it is much cheaper than the GTX 970 ATM, so I would go for the RX 480.

ya i would definitly reccomend spending as much as you would on a graphics card but instead buy a used 2600k and mobo and ram combo... there very common on ebay and only cost around 225$

Honestly for 1080p, I'd swap CPUs before getting a new GPU. Your GTX 960 is already getting bottlenecked by that CPU.

 

With regards to RX 480 performance, I can easily see it beating the GTX 980 in a few months. AMD's launch drivers aren't great, and their reference cards usually suck too. Plus, the benchmarked games were all DX11, not DX12 which the RX 480 excels at (except Hitman where the RX 480 stomped NVidia cards, but that's not a fair benchmark).

Only time will tell, however I'm fairly confident in saying that the RX 480 with driver optimization and non-reference boards will gain performance most certainly, however it'll only be at that point likely 8-12% better than a GTX 970 which is still an amazing value for the performance.

 

Now please, understand I'm not hating on the RX 480 in ANY way shape or form, however I'm simply stating that from where the benchmarks sit currently I don't expect to see too much more out of this card in the future. AMD and all of AMD's fan boys hyped this card up far too much and made it seem like it was going to be GTX 980 performance at a $200 price point, which quite obviously it is not.

i3 6100 or i5 6400 (or i5 6500) could be an option if budget is tight for OP.

 

I think that the 960 is fine for now but maybe when OP has a little bit of money later OP could just buy an RX 480 then. Since a 960 is pretty good still.

You do realize just how close the 970 and 980 are in performance right? Ignoring the VRAM issue, the 980 is only about 20-25% faster than the 970. Given the average benchmark has the 480 already ahead of the 970, driver optimizations and factory OC's from AIBs can easily make up for the rest in a little while.

 

980ti is unrealistic in DX11, but the GTX 980 is within reach.

True, but this means one of two things, either amd already figured out drivers and now will see far less improvements from that in the future, or AMD hasn't figured out drivers and will be fiddling with this for a year before it lives up to the hype
