Taiwanese Internet Cafes

those were the olden times

 

a lot of gangsters will use internet cafes as gathering places

 

same case with arcade centers

 

you will see a bunch of them playing racing games in arcades

 

for cyber cafes, they will be playing DOTA, LoL and Counterstrike

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

It looked pretty cool. Especially the lounge part.

I don't know how are the living space options in Taiwan but I imagine that having more space takes way more money compared to US or even living in apartment complexes in EU. So if I could only get living space in some shoebox I would probably like a membership there and I would spend quite a bit of my free time there.

1$ an hour? I'd live there. Why need an apartment when you got everything you need at it costs less than my current rent? Also not having to deal with noisy neightbor would be an added bonus. No more neightbor having party till morning!

 

My local LAN centre charges 5$ an hour to use their computers and you don't have any of those sweet bonuses like manga or stuff. 

 

Just checked, 40 hours for 175$ if you purchase in bulk... No thanks

It's not uncommon for people that frequent them to actually do, there is an interesting documentary about this(Net Cafe Refugees) about people living in cyber cafes. The whole ordeal fascinates me, as someone who loves the idea of working as a freelancer if I were to live in Asia I can totally see myself live in a cyber cafe as a cheaper alternative than rent.

Good video and a pretty cool insight into the Internet Cafe scene in Taipei.   Though that transition at the end to the Ting ad was pretty harsh.  Luke needed to chat a little longer.

This was a very professional feeling video. If the music would have been epic I would have thought Vice had made it. Great job and I think luke is too tall for that country

The X-amount of players, 1 rig setup would be great for small scale internet cafes. You could deploy one such server in (for example) each Starbucks with a number of thin clients along a wall. Such a setup would (hypothetically?) work well for larger countries like America vs smaller, very dense countries like Taiwan.

I am actually pretty jealous, I fell like I could almost live in one of those cafes. And those prices are so cheap, just a couple dollars to have access to a bed, unlimeted ice cream, manga, tea, and so on.

Might be slightly more difficult than you imagine. $1/hr is roughly $720 a month when counting all hours. Will be less depending on how much you are away.  Plus Luke mentioned an extra fee to use the shower and washing machine. No storage space so you would have to take everything with you. Cheaper cost of living? Sure, but highly inconvient.

I pay 740$ a month for rent. The extra shower fee would be less than electricity fees to have hot water. (not including the electricity fees to power my PC and stuff) Washing machine fees are already existing because of coin machines in all apartment buildings around america. 

 

Wouldn't have to pay 150$/month for internet, no electricity bills, no water bills. Storage space, just rent one for 20$ or something. The inconvience depends on your livestyle. To some it might be really so, to others, not having to care about all these things could be what makes them successful.
