I had no idea they were actually this "good".  When I first saw them, I assumed they were some $10 - $20 cheap plastic toy, but it looks like they're actually a half-serious attempt at headphones!  I guess it must have been Linus' outfit that threw me off :P

150 dollars?  I'd say that Sennheiser HD598s are far less embarrassing to wear on the subway.  Added bonus of having passive external speakers thanks to that open back design.  Joking aside.  Looks like a pair of headphones that prioritize form over function.  

 

Actually... speaking of subways.  How well do they isolate?

A ton of my anime fans got these headphones and wore it at Anime cosplay events

 

 

Like Linus say they sound OK but not wow

 

but its because of the cat ears shape.

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Yeah the Brookstone by me always has them on display, they're meh all around but you're paying for the 'aesthetic'

Dear Linus, stop reviewing something that has something to do with sound, you don't know enough and none of the people on your teams knows enough about audio to help you.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

this review could not have gone any better to me:

- they're plastic, it's hard to screw that up, just sad in a durability standpoint (i knew that from when i saw the first concepts)

- sound quality is "eh but acceptable" just like most audio products from questionable manufacturers who actually tried making a decent product. it's hard to cheap out that much it actually sucks (looking at streets by 50 here.)

- they're overly flashy, because thats the audience they go for.

- the ear speakers are eh, and from the sound of it i actually know exactly what's inside: the same as what's inside my €50 pocket speaker thingy. once again expected and "hard to do worse than this".

- they're priced leagues above anything else on the market, because they just apply to the kind of sheeple that buy everything with cat ears.

 

come to think of it, i guess it's kind of like a "wireless router" in the way they're trying to sell a single device thats headphones/heatset, speakers, and a fashion accessory in one package, and manage to do all 3 with varying levels of success, but isnt "completely worthless" at any of them.

Linus definitely seemed too much into them when he reviewed them, especially when he said "I ordered purple". Will have to make a few gifs.

You missed some, imo important, context for these headphones and how they came to be.

The headphones were originally designed by one of the most popular artist on deviantart, Yuumei

They were completely in style with the webseries "Fisheye Placebo"  that she draws.
She posted them on Deviantart back in 2010 and patented the idea, she did not have the resources than to make them real but mabey in the future...

Than comes along crowdfunding and together with someone else the form AxentWear to make these a reality.

The boost that the indigogo originally got was from the more than 300000 people that already were aware of her as a talented artist.
These headphones are indeed headphones and for people that like the gimmick but first of all they are an item strait from an popular artists work, that's also a reason to want/buy them. I think at least naming Wenqing Yan (Yuumei)  once would be an important part in reviewing these since that's one of the main reasons for there popularity.
That I missed.

I'd say you're correct but 598s are much more expensive here in the UK (150-160 vs 100 pounds). 588s are priced 10 pounds more pensive (110 pounds which is a nice decrease from 130~ pounds as a few months ago, prices of sennheiser products shot up, 598s from 100 to 160~, 558 from 90 to 130 and my daily drivers, mm30G from 15 pounds to 30~...) so yes, it may be less embarrassing and have better sounds but wrong market mate :P.
