Like I said... not knocking the 980ti, just not better for ALL video editing. I use the 970 and will probably wait on an EVGA Hydro Copper 1080ti

I would totally buy a Gaming X variant right now seeing as how I have a GTX 480, so for me it would be totally worth the early adopters fee.

The card that's "worth" the money is only the GTX 1070. Sure the 1080 is great but it's really replacing the 980 Ti and it runs mostly about 10 fps over that.  Certainly not worth the extra $200 or more you'd need to spend. Keep the 980 Ti 1 more year and I'd bet something else comes out to beat the 1080's pants off. Then when everyone is selling the 1080, buy it with 1 year on it... not bad...  that's how I think at least.

Oh, no. It's replacing the 980 Ti as it costs more than the 980 Ti and FAR more than the 980. 980 launched at 550$ for a reference board. 980 ti at 650$. 1080 at 700$

That's how I feel. If I had a TI's instead of a 980's I'd wait but I plan on it once there's more in stock and the price gouging ceases.
