The FCC will start to make 5G a reality this week

Well I guess The FCC is going to push the button on this one. Wielding that power stick again they are....

On Thursday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler will circulate a proposal to kick off 5G wireless proceedings. If passed, the commission will begin to identify and open up swaths of high-band spectrum, which is capable of delivering data at much higher speeds than what's currently used for 4G and LTE.

Unlike some countries, we do not believe we should spend the next couple of years studying what 5G should be, how it should operate, and how to allocate spectrum, based on those assumptions," Wheeler's prepared remarks say. "...Instead, we will make ample spectrum available and then rely on a private sector-led process for producing technical standards best suited for those frequencies and use cases."

Even though the FCC won't formally define 5G, Wheeler is putting out his own ideas for what it should be able to offer. Broadly speaking: far faster speeds. He says 5G should be "like mobile fiber," offering speeds 10 to 100 times faster than what mobile offers today.

My excitement for 5G is not overwhelmingly great as for the moment here in the US 4G LTE is still not that great with coverage. 4G LTE covers maybe 50% of the US at best.

How about we focus on a plan to increase coverage before increasing the spectrum? Hmm? Or maybe lets put forth a plan to increase the coverage along with the upgrade this way we can actually have decent coverage of the 5G spectrum. I can say I am one that suffers from lack of 4G myself I live to far out of town to get anything more than 2G and on a good day 2 bars of 4G LTE. If I go into town like I do to go to work then I get full 4G LTE coverage.

Lets focus on infrastructure as much as increasing the spectrum OK?

With the current state of cell service in the US it will never come close to saturating it for a long time.

 

They put in a faster network and give you 5-10 Mbps more and yet people still rush to whatever provider says 5G first regardless of price.....

 

When almost every country in South America has faster average 4G LTE download speeds than the US you know something is F***ed.

Its about numbers over promises... but one can hope. ;)

Everyone will just get 5G because so and so is offering it. 

 

I have a feeling Verizon will offer capable devices first. I have Verizon for a personal phone and Sprint for a company phone. I have yet to run into issues with my Verizon device. It's a little older device but I'm content with it. 

My Sprint phone on the other hand is just a struggle to get a decent signal.

 

It's going to be a while before the consumers see it anyway. Companies will start their rollout in major metros, Phone makers will start making devices, then consumers will eventually see them.  Just because the FCC is opening up the capability, doesn't mean we'll see capable devices and networks within a year.

Its same here - Was driving in a car in the woods with my friends who had T-Mobile, they couldn't get any service at all, meanwhile I was here with Verizon and 4G.

But T-Mobile is for sure faster then Verizon, but I think Verizon has the largest user base of all of them, unless some info updated.

Verizon is the largest US carrier. I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile to save on costs and while T-Mobile's coverage has gotten better since the last time I had them, it's still terrible compared to Verizon. There's areas where I can get 70mbps down on T-Mobile but if I sometimes lose service in my own home then whats the point of speed.

While I am excited of the speeds this will bring, I find coverage is the issue at this point. At least in Michigan we have tons of services that have 4G, but only work near cities most of the time.

I have T-Mobile as well (about 14 years now) and though they have become better at over all coverage on the voice band they have not really focused on data coverage so much as they have with speed...

I have a feeling Verizon will offer capable devices first. I have Verizon for a personal phone and Sprint for a company phone. I have yet to run into issues with my Verizon device. It's a little older device but I'm content with it. 

My Sprint phone on the other hand is just a struggle to get a decent signal.

 

It's going to be a while before the consumers see it anyway. Companies will start their rollout in major metros, Phone makers will start making devices, then consumers will eventually see them.  Just because the FCC is opening up the capability, doesn't mean we'll see capable devices and networks within a year.

Maybe. If Verizon can resolve some labor issues, they'll be the first. The strike ended, and Union came to an agreement, but they still have each technician covering ~800 square miles and working 60+ hours a week.

In my experience, VZW has always got some new phone or network signal upgrade first. I don't pay too much attention, only based on what I see on the commercials, in store while dealing with a phone issue, or upgrading my phone.

 

I've got a Note 4 from Verizon, and a LG G3 from Sprint. I just wish the LG didn't have that rear button. When I switch between phones, it messes me up. Although I love the LG's double tap to wake feature. I use that more often than the actual button. 

As far as the techs work distance, I'm sure VZW would love more, but it's not exactly an easy job. A friend does that down in Mississippi and he likes it. Although, he's single, no kids, and lives in his moms basement. He only chose to live in a basement because he says it allows him to save money, and not waste money on an apt he's hardly ever at.  Which makes sense.

Yea it'll be awhile for 5g to become a reality on the consumer end.

 

Gotta build the hardware, train the techs, test it, test it, deploy it, start selling capable devices.

Verizon bought up all the "good" (best at penetration) frequencies and doesn't even utilize half of them. So other carriers like T-Mobile are stuck with the frequencies that penetrate the worst. 

 

But T-Mobile just recently acquiring most of Band 12 (the old OTA TV UHF) so this will change.  They have already slowly rolled it out in major cities.

I have noticed an improvement already where I live. But they do have a ways to go.

The US might only have 50% geographical 4g coverage (I didn't bother to check to see if that's a true statement but I wouldn't be surprised), but as of last year it has a 98% population coverage. It's a large country with large swaths of just barely populated areas...imagine that...spending the money to cover 50% of our landmass to get 2% of your population...that's just not feasible.

 

Ultimately, it's idiotic inadvisable to wait on innovation because of that 2%.

 

However, currently I see no need for me, personally, to have 5g on my phone. I'm not downloading giant files on my phone that need to be downloaded faster, and I don't notice any sort of lag when watching videos. I could see the need if I didn't have internet in my house and used tethering...but I do have internet, and I don't tether.

Isn't 5G the same as LTE+ here in Canada? I read somewhere it's basically the same thing as LTE+.

I have to strongly disagree.

Cellular companies need to focus on coverage over area, not necessarily at 4G/LTE/5G speeds of course, but to get that initial coverage. A lot f people still travel for whatever reason and having voice coverage is essential since people are now dependent on cellular devices, besides if your in a situation you can make that 911 call.

This is why I made the statement I did. (maybe I should have been more specific) 

 

As for coverage with data, I agree it is not a feasible or profitable venue to cover such an wide area. But right now getting at the least companies claim to expand their data to all/most customers and right now the only one with that kind of data coverage is, in order, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Problem is they are not as focused on getting that suburb areas updated so much as getting the downtown metro areas covered. It sucks. I pay for coverage but because I live in a suburb and not the metropolitan I have to wait considerably longer for the same coverage for say 3g that metropolitan's enjoyed for a number of years. I didnt see full bar of 3g until 4gLTE was introduced by T-Mobile, granted they did a better job of updating to LTE because of the purchase of (can't remember atm). Either way Cellular companies need to finish upgrading coverage areas before then next upgrade starts since the suburbs will continue to suffer lack of the last upgrade. :|

 

Now I dont think that innovation need to stop because 2%+ dont have coverage. They just need to continue enlarging the base.

Czech Republic has above 90% LTE coverage and almost no fiber. LTE is super fast, especially for phones. I wish that ISPs would invest more in fiber than cellular.

People use their phones more nowadays so it makes since for them to pay attention to cellular.
