Weird cable in a student dorm

Hey guys,

 

at a friend's house, I noticed that her ethernet cable is so broken it'll only register in one orientation. That's obviously extremely annoying, so I gave her an ethernet cable I still had lying around... it fits in her laptop just fine, but not in the wall, for there the cable already there has this connector (see picture)

 

I've never seen that before. So... what IS this, and where can I get one for as cheap as possible?

 

(Obviously we'll also ask the facility management, as the cable seems to be provided with the flat)

I should make that clearer. This is the cable that's already there, and this is the end that goes into the wall socket. The other end is RJ45.

I honestly don't know but from the looks of it maybe it is a futuristic optical type connection

 

 

Edit: if it is just a cable its prob not optical

I would. But for that I'd need to know what connector this is...

 

Unless you mean one of those female-female RJ45s. Got one of those, and that'll probably work. I'm just really curious.

I'm about 90% sure it is a pure fiber to fiber connection.  Now considering it is on a campus I could only imagine that it is AWFULLY throttled and monitored...  So I don't know if I'd use it for much myself just based off that.  But it is in fact either a fiber connection or it is a AWFULLY close piece of proprietary equipment.

do they have cables that go straight from fiber to ethernet? i thought some conversion had to go on

It is a bit beefier than a "typical" looking one... but boy oh boy it looks VERY similar.

Yeah, I've thought so as well... possibly a proprietary cisco thing. In which case I'd be sol  I'll still wait for further pics, but thanks!

seeing as a reverse image search on google found nothing i have no idea. i do not however think thats a fiber connection youve got there, thats a property connector for normal ethernet most likely

Never seen that before... but you could chop the RJ45 off and install a new one if that end is what is giving you the trouble.

 

Its most likely a proprietary connector, not fiber, as I doubt they would be able to cram a media converter into the boot of that connector. There isn't a box between that connector and the RJ45 right?

 

If the wall socket has copper pins protruding from it, I'm certain its a proprietary 10/100 connector.

No, it's just a cable. I couldn't put an RJ45 on there, because I need to plug it into the wall socket. 

 

Anyway, thanks guys... I'll ask IT tomorrow (they provide the connection, they'll know), and maybe if they give out those cables for free to students who live there. If not, I'll just fumble somthing together with RJ45 extensions. ^^

I've seen this hold on I have to go google to remember what it's called.

 

EDIT: I searched for almost an hour but I just can't find it nor remember what it's called. Here's what I can remember about this connector:

• It is a proposed alternative to ethernet
• it's mostly used in businesses and other semi-public locations to limit who is able to plug in, providing a little bit of network security
• I have a vague memory that it is/was more common in Europe
• I think it has some ability to carry video or telephone signals on the same cable, which was supposed to be a selling point for installing it in homes. 
• I know this is a copper cable, not optical.

I will be very interested in finding out what the name of this connector is, if they'll tell you.

based on my subsequent searches based on the words in this PDF, I'm fairly certain it is only used in Germany, and I have no idea how widespread its use is.

 

EDIT: As far as I can tell, the way it's supposed to work is the bottom two squares (red and green) are for ethernet, the upper left square is phone, and the upper right square is video.
