Worth selling r9 290 now and wait for rx480?

carguy86

When the rx 480 drops im going to change my xfx r9 290 for two rx 480s in crossfire (will change my case too going get a fractal design define s)

My question is, is it Worth selling my gpu now and buying one rx 480 at launch or wait for the prices to drop and then buy two rx 480s and selling my 290 after buying them? (Card is currently Worth 200$ give or take a little)

You would be side grading really.  A overclocked R9-290 is going to be right on par with the RX 480.  So, if you're willing to spend the $250 to get essentially the same performance (in non VR games), then you're doing the right thing.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

If that is the case, just wait till January and buy your card then.  You'll get a cheaper card OR better card.

And no the 480 does NOT have 8GB of VRAM.

He isn't. The suggestion that the 290 is pretty much the equivalent of a new 480 is absolutely ridiculous. Ignore it.

a R9-290 OVERCLOCKED can compete with a 390X, yes.  I frequently get a 25% overclock on my R9-290, not to include even LMG themselves had a 290 that OC'ed so hard that it was on par with a 290X.

Because AMD said it was a 4GB card in their press conference.  I'm sure there will be a 8GB model, but its not going to be $200.

Ohh, well if you think its worth the "upgrade" then be my guest.  I'm not selling my R9-290 until I get a better offering from team Red.

Jesus Christ.... you are more butthurt than a turtle with a semi up it's ass....

Plus, it says Theres a 4gb version of the card that will cost 200$ it does not say theres only a 4gb version.

I'm not butt hurt at all.  I want everyone in the world to buy AMD products as I own AMD stock...  I'm just trying to save someone $250+ on a "upgrade" that isn't going to give them more than a 10% performance difference.

ESPECIALLY when they don't plan on stretching the video cards legs until January, when they could just save their money for 3-6 months and catch the video card (or a step up) on a black Friday sale or something.

This is the age old case of: Buy all your parts at once. I don't think the 290s will drop much in value between now and Q1 2017 when Vega is released because the 290 will be just behind the 480 4gb. 480 8Gb cards will be $250-300 so you'd be better off just buying a $500-600 single GPU Vega card or a 1080/1080Ti that will be out by then.

Since the announcement of the RX480, 290 and 290X prices (on ebay, UK) have skyrocketed from 200+ pounds to 100-150...

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

if you have to pay extra for then probably not

I'd still wait for the benchmarks,

but so far we know that the RX480 has the the same amount of SPs as 290 of newer generation that are also clocked considerably higher

so maybe it is after all...

Because people are stupid and think if they don't sell now it'll be worth nothing. Same thing happened with 7970's before 290s came out. They dipped in price and became stupid cheap. Then after launch prices came back up. Mind you all that happened before the mining craze.

That being said, if you want to sell your 209 for 100 pounds, do it. Or buy another for 100 pounds and have more GPU power.

id honestly wait out getting a RX480 going from a R9 290 unless of course you end up getting 2 and specifically the 8gb models. You'd use the same power as your 290 and have twice the Vram and twice the performance. if power draw isnt a concern whatsoever consider getting a 390X or 2 390's on the cheap.

Sorry, I deleted that advice since on second thought it's probably pretty bad, as your 290 would have no resale value by the time Vega rolled around. But at least Vega 10 should be a gaming card meant to compete with the 1080. Vega 11 is going to be the heavy hitter to challenge GP100/GP102.
