[Story] Raspberry Pi Fire

Well, about a few minutes ago. I was setting up a raspberry pi to be used. I choose to get my usb charger (android usb charger) to power on the raspberry pi. I got the power from the laptop and I tested it and it worked okay . I then continued to plug in the HDMI cable and test it again. I turned around for a second to find a usb mouse and keyboard and I turn back to see what was cooking and I saw my raspberry pi smoking . I was like wudda fudge and now I'm scared to plug it back in, even more scared to plug it into an outlet . That shiz was scary..

is your phone charger a 2.1A charger?

because the Pi only needs 1A to work

2.1A chargers will kill the Pi

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

the power came from the usb port on the computer . I tested it like twice before adding the HDMI cable. Tho , I think my monitor is what burnt my Pi because when i powered on the Pi the monitor flickered once

flicker once may not mean the monitor killed the Pi thou

the monitor may be trying to get the video feed from the Pi

touch the HDMI cable and see if you get a shock.

also see what is burnt on the Pi

mine worked fine, chargers don't have to supply all their power all the time, plus the pi usually needs close to 2 amps

try again with just power and see if you can get the Pi working

then proceed to plug the display to the Pi with a different HDMI cable

Your pi is probably defective. I have 2 of them and they're great little machines for gateways and embedded systems. I'd send that one back and get another. Which pi model is it? Model B, Model B+ or the Pi 2?

if your 2.1A charger kills a pi you need a new 2.1A charger.

they're no supposed to forcefeed a device 2.1A, its an "up to" rating tf the device needs/can receive it.

Then in that case it uses the PoUSB Amperage - Around 1.5 Amperes if my googlefu is right.

That's a lie. If you are doing any type of task or OCing they say to use 2A+. I am using a 2.1A 5V ipad brick and it handles it perfectly.

is your phone charger a 2.1A charger?

because the Pi only needs 1A to work

2.1A chargers will kill the Pi

If I'm not mistaken, an electrical load pulls exactly as many amps as it needs. If it needs or can take more, then it will be limited by the supply either safely limiting the current or the supply blowing up.
