More cores improve performane on phones?

Hi! this is a question that arised in light that the Samsung Galaxy S6, doesn`t really seem to have a faster CPU than, something like the Galaxy S4 mini for example, not by much at any rate, but it does seem to be more potent in the fact that the CPU in that is an octacore, versus a 2-cores CPU. 

 

I wanna get a new phone, and my 2 options right now are either a Samsung Galaxy J2 or a S4 mini, both of them are pretty similar and have similar prices, but at least on paper, the J2 seems to be superior, because even tho it has a SLIGHTLY slower CPU, it is a quadcore, but on the other side, the S4 mini has more RAM. 

 

And I don't know anything about phone GPUs, so i'm not too sure how they compare in that regard. The S4 also doesn't natively support Android 5, so what do you guys thing?

Depends, it's like cores in a PC, if the cores are half as powerful then the one with double the cores would perform the same when all cores are stressed on both devices but not every dev is going to optimise their apps to utilise all cores so it depends.

Tbh the S4 mini is an overpriced, outdated piece of junk that tries to get sales because it has S4 in its name.

I would get the J2, at least that one isn't as outdated as the s4 mini.

I was thinking about that originally, but since the mobile phone market seems to be a lot more uniform than the PC or console market for example, I was wondering if the vast majority of apps were optimized for stronger cores or more weaker cores.

No, look at androids with 8 cores then the 6s.

good rule of thumb is any phone should be at lease something around the performance of a snapdragon 410 but that's not that fast anymore so 8 cores are a good option but usually they are the weakest cores of em all.

Is there a good reason then for high-end smarthphones to be packing octacores with every core being basically as powerful as the ones in a lower-end phone?

Like in PC, it depends on the applications and also the scheduler. If the app can take advantage of multiple cores, then more cores the better. Also if the scheduler can assign task to cores effectively, more cores would result in better responsiveness.

 

Problem comes when the manufacturers tout more cores as a selling point. Right now there's just not that much apps that uses multiple cores and imo the Android scheduler is a mess right now. So there's really not much point in getting more cores because it's just a numbers game. Kinda like comparing penis size if you ask me.

I have a different question, I understeand that there's different manufacturers for phone CPUs and GPUs, but I've come to think that they are more differences between each other than on the PC? 

 

For example, the specs of this 2 phones: (keeping in mind that they aren't completely accurate since the one on the right has 1.5GBs of RAM as far as I'm aware)

I take a look at this and I can't really discern which of this phones is more powerful, I don't understeand how the naming conventions for the CPUs and GPUs works, or what the differences between them are or really anything.
