The card starts buzzing before the fans start kicking in, then it starts buzzing again...

This is happening when I run the 3DMark...it shouldn't be doing this at all. This is somewhat concerning m

My setup: Asus ROG Maximus Hero VIII

EVGA G2 850

16GB RAM

Samsung 850 SSD

Ermahgerd, my gpu has coil whine.

 

Most gpus have it, at least from what I've learned when researching it. You could try RMAing, but some companies won't RMA coil whine. And you could get another unit that will have it too. 

Also, either your mic is crappy or the rest of your system is so loud it's barely hearable on the recording, so it's not that bad, some have it way worse.

It would be cool if companies invested in build quality instead of RGB lighting and other bullshit.

You know what features I want in my product? The good build quality feature, I'll take 1 order of good build quality with my product pls, skip the RGB.

At first I thought it was coil whine, but it sounds like more like a buzzing sound.

Also sorry about the video quality, the video was taken on my iPhone 6...and there are fans blowing inside the case...so yeah

Sounds like coil whine. It's harmless but can be a nuisance if severe.

 

If you cant hear it without sticking your head in the case, then I consider it a non-issue.

I would generally be okay with mild coil whine, but as soon as I boot up 3D Mark this noise can be heard through the case, and my case has noise dampening material, its a very silent case.

I expected coil whine to sound different, this sounds like an electrical buzzing noise to be more specific.

Some of the reviewers did aknowledge some mild coil whine but nobody mentioned anything about buzzing. 

Question, can overclocking the CPU cause this to the video card?

MSI and Asus are pretty well known for coil whine on there cards. I recommend getting XFX/Sapphire amd cards and Evga/zotac Nvidia products. the amd recommendations are from personally experience and the nvidia ones are just ones i never see complained about. Lots of reviews on MSI and Asus 380/380X cards had complaints of coil whine.

That is some primo coil whine. It does it during transition screens while loading. Try Heaven or Valley, especially when exiting. You'll have a riot at like 5000 FPS. Even my Rev 1.1 G1 970 goes a little apeshit. I'm not too concerned though, neither should you. If there is something terminal, GB will have to deal with it, so will MSI in your case.

 

To me it sounds like something you wouldn't really notice with the side panel on under normal loads etc. But if it is just way too intrusive, might as well bitch about it to MSI. This coil whine business is just silly. Regarding "so many GPUs have coil whine", well... It depends really. It depends on components, build quality and load. If I'm honest, I've never had any coil whine with a lot of Sapphire stuff on the AMD side for example. On the other hand, I've encountered coil whine on my G1 970, the Strix 970, the MSI 970 and so on. Unless it's really prevalent in normal framerates (30-60-120 range) you should be fine.

I couldn't really hear it even with headphones on. I've heard way worse, let's just put it that way. I heard the fans over the buzzing noise... You don't need a good mic to hear it but I just couldn't hear it.

Normal coil whine to me, if there's no glitch/anomaly in performance/stability i say keep it for a week or 2.

I was monitoring a thread on reddit and it seems like the MSI issue is widespread, some are saying its just bad capacitors. 

Anyways Newegg told me to send them back the card and they will send me a replacement.

 

Does anyone know maybe a driver update would fix this? Or is this just hardware?

If you have another PSU try it with that to make sure you do not an incompatibility

I remember putting my spare PSU in my system to have my 970 coil whine so loud I could hear it from the next room whereas when I used my normal PSU it is silent.

The EVGA G2 850 PSU shouldn't have any issues running this card, anyways just to make sure I went ahead and tested on my old ANTEC 850 PSU and the issue is still there.

It makes no sense that these premium cards that MSI advertises on their site so highly has such a horrible issue like this.

Just about any other card will have coil whine. And since coil whine is more common in maxwell. Pascal will very likely have coil whine as well. 

 

Sometimes its also a combination of high end psus. There's nothing wrong if your card whines. I don't get why you're so worked up.

I could barely hear anything with the other video as well. I've heard WAY, WAY, WAY worse coil whine that that. I heard the bad buzzing for maybe 2 seconds.... but the rest of the time it sounded fairly standard to me.

 

Here is REALLY bad WHINE....
