BlackBerry gives away user personal data, including messages, to help police 'kick ass' world wide

A CBC investigation unveils that for many years BlackBerry has works with governments and police world wide in actively sending people private user information, including text messages sent via BlackBerry Messenger app, current address, PIN, SIM card information, account information, and "other" to authorities, corrupted judges, and government around the world to to help police 'kick ass' as an insider says. The decision to do was made by the company itself, by building a unit division within the company to do just that. And unlike other companies, BlackBerry isn't releasing any transparency reports of their action.

A  specialized unit inside mobile firm BlackBerry has for years enthusiastically helped intercept user data — including BBM messages — to help in hundreds of police investigations in dozens of countries, a CBC News investigation reveals.

CBC News has gained a rare glimpse inside the struggling smartphone maker's Public Safety Operations team, which at one point numbered 15 people, and has long kept its handling of warrants and police requests for taps on user information confidential. 
 
A number of insiders, none of whom were authorized to speak, say that behind the scenes the company has been actively assisting police in a wide range of high profile investigations.

 

But unlike many other technology companies, which regularly publish transparency reports, it is not clear how many requests BlackBerry receives each year, nor the number of requests it has fulfilled.  Insiders say, for example, that BlackBerry intercepted messages to aid investigators probing the political scandals in Brazil that are dogging suspended President Dilma Rousseff. The company also helped authenticate BBM messages in Major League Baseball's drug investigation that saw New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez suspended in 2014.

BC News obtained a version of the cover letter, one used by Italian authorities. It includes checkboxes for "emergency/exigent/routine" requests, to help BlackBerry prioritize life-threatening situations over routine investigations.

3 categories of information

It offers a menu of three categories of information BlackBerry can provide:

 

  • Device, account, and subscriber data (including PIN, IMEI, SIM, BlackBerry ID, name, address, payment, and purchase information).
  • Message transaction logs (times and dates of BBM and PIN message exchanges, current BBM contact list).
  • "Other."

Multiple law enforcement and company sources tell CBC that the "Other" section is where police detail requests to intercept and descramble user communications, including the consumer versions of its once popular BBM and Pin-to-Pin messaging services.

 

For many years Blackberry devices and especially BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) app has been marketed as a safe and secure device, with a maximum level of privacy, yet has been working with authorities and breaking complexity their promises of security and privacy.

This doesn't actually surprise me. Its the same reason I don't trust Whatsapp either. Better off encrypting messages yourself.

Why does anyone still care what blackberry does?

 

Jokes aside, I wouldn't be surprised if some large company decided to sue. There are things they don't want to be known.

So much for one of the best securities out there if they just hand it over to police. 

This is the opposite of what Apple has been trying to accomplish for some time now. Sort of. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Too bad in many places of the world the police would use it to kick ass, literally: police brutality is pretty serious to just condone unrestricted police access to information. Even with  the rules of evidence and citizen rights it's bad enough.

Blackberry is a joke now... That's just sad.

I remember when they were the go-to phones for companies here, but they took too long to give us proper "smartphone" capabilities and now this...Who will even do business with them now, other than those who are contractually obligated to do so... like a certain cable company here.

Blackberry finally shooting themselves in their last toe. They wanted to change their image to one of security and privacy for large corporations and governments... And now they're showing they can't even achieve that.

The thing is that Whatapps encryption protocol is fully detailed in their whitepaper, and it is considered very, very secure. You are most likely putting yourself at more danger by rolling with your own crypto. Besides, how do you communicate with other people if you use your own crypto implementation?
