Chaos Computer Club Breaks Apple TouchID……..

http://www.ccc.de/en/updates/2013/ccc-breaks-apple-touchid

Linus called this last show he was on…

SHOW THE VIDEO -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HM8b8d8kSNQ

Realistically have we hit the pinnacle of fingerprint scanners? Mythbusters broke through the same way… doesn’t seem like its much better…

"In reality, Apple's sensor has just a higher resolution compared to the sensors so far. So we only needed to ramp up the resolution of our fake"

Are we getting one? It would be cool to see a video where someone has to actively get someones fingerprint(me trying to get yours) then actually trying to break into the phone

Are biometrics just a false illusion of security? I mean most facial recognition software can be fooled by a photo printer and facebook…

How exactly did they do it -> http://dasalte.ccc.de/biometrie/fingerabdruck_kopieren?language=en

AMD Mantle API

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7371/understanding-amds-mantle-a-lowlevel-graphics-api-for-gcn

Easy porting of low level and high level API from consoles to PC’s

Is it really worth it for a dev to put that much time into working with mantle when it can only affect AMD users?

Maybe this is where games like Star Citizen will shine… Maybe this is the AMD optimization that Star Citizen and the other games during the livestream were boasting about

General comments on the AMD Hawaii meetup

New YouTube comment section is here - force feeds Google+ **potential guest topic **

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/59506-new-youtube-comment-system-is-finally-here/

Once it is rolled out users will be forced to sign up for Google+ accounts to participate in the comments section

You can still use an alias on the youtube side so you don’t have to show your real name

Another move that makes google look more like a closed and force feeding beast than ever

additional moderating tools will give video creators the ability to block phrases or auto-approve comments.

Steam announcement 1 - SteamOS...Boom.

http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/

Steam doesn't support multiple logins but with this and family sharing could you share with yourself and then be able to stay logged in? Pretty sure :D

Linux OS - But you can stream from your desktop to your TV shield style so you can play windows games

Will support Music, TV, Movies etc… gonna be a pretty epic media center PC…

Specifically stated that with family sharing you “take turns” playing games… No epic local co-op loophole for me…

Family options so that “you don’t [have] to see your parents’ games in your library”... Right… Naw its so dad can hide hotline miami from his 7 year old kid… Good feature though

Steam announcement 2 - Steam Machines...Smaller Boom.

http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamMachines/

We kinda already knew that…

Looks like there will be many different availiable form factors… maybe some teased in the photo?

Shipping 300 prototype steam boxes to users if they complete a “quest”...How much will people pay for one of these off ebay?

available in 2014… so on valve time ill get one of these when im 40…

The box directly from valve will be specialized for user control over their hardware while boxes from other vendors will focus on size, price, sound, or other factors

Prototypes will ship this year…. *cough* Valve Time *cough*

Steam Announcement 3 - Steam Controller...plop.

http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamController/

“A different kind of gamepad”...yes...indeed…

They did complete their goal imo, there are certain games id never touch with a controller before that I would attempt to play with this controller (Civ V)

Precise haptic feedback - super-precise haptic feedback, employing dual linear resonant actuators

delivering in-game information about speed, boundaries, thresholds, textures, action confirmations, or any other events (haptic feedback)

As a parlour trick they can even play audio waveforms and function as speakers.(Haptic)

Shareable configurations for games

All the screens & pads are clickable

simulator games, turn based games etc… maybe not shooters imo

https://twitter.com/chrisremo/status/383657630675116032

Twitch.TV no longer automatically archives broadcasts

Makes sense

Spent some time talking to COO at PAX. There are some challenges

- no transcoding

- no editing

- 1080p

- HUGE storage requirements

- Not Google… needs to actually have a biz that makes sense now.

Nvidia spins on its heels, now supporting Linux in wake of Steam

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/60148-nvidia-vp-says-it-like-it-is/

A 1000W PC will not lose to a 200W xbox (most pc’s arn’t running at 1000W….)

Has said in the past “Nvidia, Fuck you” and given them the finger for being clearly the worst hardware partner they have ever had

Torvalds has responded -> saying he's optimistic but not quite ready to apologize to Nvidia. "We'll see,"

"They've already been much better in the ARM SoC space than they were on the more traditional GPU side, and I really hope that some day I can just apologize for ever giving them the finger."

Blackberry looks to sell itself for 47 billion, $9 per share

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/fairfax-strikes-47-billion-deal-to-buy-blackberry/article14470689/#dashboard/follows/

Happy someone was actually interested… after the news that they lost 1Billion in quarter 2 and fired 4500 employees it was looking pretty grim

Sam Reynolds from VR zone brought up an interesting point about the fact that a Canadian buyer eliminates a lot of waiting on approvals that would otherwise be needed

They lost 20% share value after the $1billion and 4500 employee loss, but gained 7% after the announcement that someone was interested in buying them

It isn’t over yet… Fairfax, the buyers, have 6 weeks to comb through confidential files and ensure that there are no unforeseen dangers before they officially acquire them.

People fooled by fake Apple iOS ad.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/people-falling-fake-apple-ios-115719246.html

Come on people….

"Update to IOS 7 and become waterproof." Then it says, "“In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry.”

Bittorrent to support bundle based paygates

http://venturebeat.com/2013/09/24/the-art-is-the-cash-register-bittorrent-releases-bundles-in-alpha/

Bundles combine content and commerce by enclosing files with wrappers that offer a part of the content free, and more via a pay gate

payment can be anything -> a like, a tweet, email address, a newsletter signup, cash.

And, in a novel twist, artists want filesharers to share these files — because wherever the file goes, so goes the pay gate.

Madonna, Linken Park, and Greatful Dead drummer Mickey Hart already using it

[drove] an additional 880,000 Amazon impressions for the book,” Tim Feriss says. “In my experience, there is no faster method for getting multimedia content to fans

People have been saying it for a long time now… the biggest reason piracy exists is because most distribution lanes are terrible, is this the solution?

Can this fix bittorrents problem of having a terribly negative aura around their name?

I ran it a few times and then gave up.

Got up to around 12th I think it was on the global Intel 6 core rankings.

It loves core speed and ram speed, but my cpu started dropping itself down when I went above 5ghz it would bench at 5.2ghz but the scores were lower than running it at 5.0ghz.
