unlike haswell-e, i'm loving the much simpler naming of the models for the Broadwell-E line-up. Generally speaking, desktop skylake i7 and i5 processors model name is much "greeter" than previous intel processors. However desktops i3, Pentium and Celeron and mobile skylake processor model "name" in my mind is still confusing

I don't know the Specific Heat Capacity of Alcohol (and don't care enough to google it) but it boils at a really low temperature, so would have to be pressurised anyhow so it's not ideal for a liquid cooling system (also you couldn't really use plastic pipes). I hear the Soviet Union had fun with liquid Sodium to cool their nuclear reactors years ago. Because nothing says "safety" like taking a group 1 metal, melting it, running it around a probably pressurised loop, and putting it in close proximity to a water moderator. Nope, no problem here, this cannot possibly go wrong.

Actually it's not that low: boiling point of 78 degrees iirc, which admittedly is probably too low for a custom loop considering some parts can get hotter than that, but that's not so different from water really.  As for heat capacity, it's a bit better than water on a molar basis - 112.4 J/mol-K for ethanol compared to 74.539 J/mol-K for water.  Though I think the number that matters when we're talking liquid cooling would be energy per degree volume, or something like J/L-K.  In that case water would be 4136 J/L-K and ethanol would be 1925 J/L-K so not nearly as good.

I'd wonder if there was a benefit to using Mercury in a loop, it would be heavy and potentially toxic (we still have thermometers though) but Mercury must have a way better heat dissipation quality than anything else you could get in a loop, right?

The problem (well one of the many ) with mercury is it will eat aluminum so you'd have to be very careful about what's in the loop.

Mercury is something any water cooler might think about sooner or later... apart from sourcing enough of the stuff, I hate to imagine how strong a pump you would need to actually get it moving.

I wonder if you super-sized Arctic Silver, would that work? Put in tiny particles of some metal in the coolant, but the particles would have to be small and inert enough to not interfere with anything and keep suspended in the flow.

 

Oh, I had also considered replacing regular water with heavy water before. I was thinking the slight density boost might help there. Never tried it, when a physicist reminded me it would be radioactive and questions will be asked if I tried sourcing it.
