1070 or Duel 480?

I'm thinking of getting a new graphics card and was looking at either getting the 1070 or two 480s. Which one should I get?

 

Also, is the duel 480s as powerful as a single 1080?

1080 because 2 480s offers you no upgrade path.

No, this has been covered in other topics. AMD used different graphics setting between the two. And crossfire only works some of the time while the 1080 is a 1080 all of the time.

We'll see if AMD's claims are true when we see some 3rd-party benchmarks. Testing by independent companies is always a bit sketchy.

The question is about the 1070, it would be a no brainer if it was about a 1080

We don't know:

 

1. RX 480 is not out yet

2. GTX 1070 is not out yet

3. We have 1 benchmark for Crossfire RX 480, in a game that has so far favoured AMD's hardware pretty much every time

Whoops, I saw 1080 in the post and completely forgot we were talking about the 1070. Anyways, my point still stands- Go for the most powerful single gpu card that you can afford.

Crossfire is much more stable and is support on 90% of AAA games which is where the CF is going to matter. On games like CS:GO or Rocket League ( no idea if they support it ) it won't matter.

The best he can do is wait for people like Digital Foundry to see what he wants to do. Or... get a 980Ti and OC it for $350 to beat a 1070 OC'd.

Support does not equal a performance gain. I had a lot of games that had crossfire profiles. But they ether showed no performance gain, or the problems caused by running Xfire outweighed the benefit.

What do you mean beat a 1070? The 1070 beats the 980ti on all benchmarks. Plus 3rd party coolers arent even on it yet. So when that happens, the 1070 will definitely outperform all 980ti's.

ALWAYS go for the single more powerful card it's always better...

and that graph they showed...this is DX12 ashes of the singularity which is basically an AMD sponsored tech demo so it's a ''best case scenario'' for this setup...you will encounter hundreds of modern games with poor or no crossfire scaling and support and lots of headaches if you go the crossfire road...a GTX 1070 is a 1070 it'll perform epic in every games...where as the R9 480 CFX setup will often play games on a single card.

Get a 1070. I got the sli  gt750m Lenovo y510p. I within a month I learned my lesson.   (multi gpu setups suck)

Crossfire of mid range cards has its pros and cons.  I would wait to see real world benchmarks, but Crossfire RX480's will be a really solid performing set up with the potential to beat the 1070, although I wouldn't really expect it to consistently beat the 1080, but again lets wait and see benchmarks.  Chances are a single RX480 will be enough for both 1080p and 1440p anyway if it performs in the 390x/980 range like expected.

For the same price, yes.  If you can get 2 cards for cheaper that perform better than the equivalent price single card it is absolutely worth it.  

 

These days CF/SLI support, frametimes etc are all pretty damn good anyway.  Nowhere near the nightmare of microstutter and late support it used to be.

Anyone remember this..? It's a synthetic benchmark but we can see looking at a single card and comparing it to the SLI performance we can see that you're not getting 2x the performance when running them in crossfire, infact it looks like you're only getting 45% the performance from that 2nd card. 

 

We know that the GTX 1080 can be sometimes from 25-30% faster than the GTX 1070. So I imagine a GTX 1070 is somewhere around the 23000 range, slightly faster than a Titan X by a few hundred points but slower than two RX 480's.

I am a Nvidia fanboy; because my first high end AMD GPU, the 7970 died, in a year. I have never had a problem with any of my Nvidia GPUs. Lot's of older ports; use physx also major titles such as Batman Arkham and Mafia. Nvidia has much more optimized drivers; profiles are released closer to launch[generally] for new games. Crossfire is rarely utilized, sli is rarely utilized as well. however Nvidia tries to pump out sli profiles at launch... Gsync is better than free sync but, overpriced....

Actually if you have any sort of overclock on the 980ti it beats it by 5%-20%. The 1070 scores a graphics score of 9386 when overclocked, source Awesome Sauce Network Benchmarks. My GTX980ti which has a nice overclock on it nothing too extreme, gets 10331 on the graphics score. The 1070 is not an amazing card that beats the 980ti. It beats a refrence 980ti with no overclock, which all of the benchmark are using when compared to an OCed 1070. The card sucks and it costs too much. I would get the RX480X as it has both GPUs on one chip so cooling is easier and you have the option of getting another. Also with DX12 coming it doesn't use CF or SLI so GPU scaling is close to 1:1. I also don't see any games going backwards so all new AAA games will use Vulkan or DX12. With these also comes things like async which makes AMD way ahead of Nvidia. Personally I would just wait and see but the 490 might be a good choice for you

I can tell you are a fanboy. Freesync and G sync do the same exact thing. Both are identical except Nvidia charges way to much for a proprietary module that is not needed.
