Actually, 6-pin is rated for 75W, and the card can draw about 75W over PCIe.

So, one could assume that all AMD did was add these two values together.

Still tells you nothing about real world power consumption (one would assume this is a decent amount less than the total amount the card can draw) nor anything about the TDP.

Well you always squeeze a bit more but yes if fury like perf at 75W would be insane

You have to remember - they specifically said (less than 150W) so I expect around 135W since there's always a bit of overhead. The PCIe port supplies around 75W and the 6-pin is nominal for 75W so around 150W is the max available to the card. Seeing as the overhead is usually around 20% the stock power draw should be around 125-130W

The 480 is performing like a 980/Nano from the looks of it so 1440p max settings is possible as long as you don't go crazy with AA

Anywhere within 15% of a GTX 980 is a win.  Lower power draw than a GTX 980 as well, another nice thing.

This logic doesn't apply on other side. I didn't save $150 by buying my 780 for $480 when I could have gotten the 970 for $330, or the 390 for $310. (the 290 was over $700 at the time of my purchase due to it being the peak of bitcoin and litecoin mining). As the 970 and 390 weren't out yet.

 

And nobody is trying to get you to replace your 980 with an RX480. 

 

Unless you JUST bought the 980. In which case, bad decisions were made.

Yea, I'd actually rather they went with a single 8-pin instead of a 6-pin but I guess time will tell how good the card actually is. :)

What I am happy about is, four years and a week later, we get a card faster and more capable than my HD7970Ghz card for less than half the price.. I paid $460 for one of my 7970's now I will pay that same amount for two RX480's and depending on the optimization for crossfire I will see really good gains and also be able to utilize freesync. All that with less than half the power draw.
