iirc they are claiming this is a 150W card.  You'll also notice it has a single 6 pin connector, so unless they're breaking the rules, it is literally drawing 100% of what it is allowed to given the connectors it has.  That pretty much rules out any overclocking possibility, at least at first glance.

They did go out of spec with the 295x2 back in the day, so you probably could muster another 25 watts at least without being too concerned, as long as you don't have a junk PSU.

I can see some terribly designed motherboards actually struggling with dual or more 480s...with 2 480s, you're already loading 150Watts on the PCIe slots which is quite high IMO as the 6 pin is technically only designed to deliver 75Watts (but you can technically draw more power out of a 6 pin I'm pretty sure :P as how much you can draw isn't dependent on the connector and cables (to a degree) but on the PSU).

Lol, no i meant with the 480. Even though ATX specs would limit the stock 480 to 150 watt power draw, AMD don't seem too concerned with breaking the specs.

It's all down to the PSU as you technically can draw more than just 75 watts out of the 6 pin connector...think about it, most 8 pins are just 2 extra ground cables leading off 2 of the existing ground cables.

Technically, the card is allowed to draw 75w through the pci-e 6pin connector and 60w through the pci-e slot, so it's only 135w.

 

The 6pin connector can indeed provide even the full 150w, the cables are thick enough to handle the current.

6+2 pin and 8 pin power connectors plug into the same PCI-E output on the power supply. The output doesn't magically become able to handle less power, just because the cable is plugged into a 6 pin connector on the GPU and has the two extra pins on the 6+2 connector not attached to anything.

150W is the max power draw, in reality the card should only be drawing around 95W-100W under load.

Hopefully.  But even then, most cards have a little wiggle room between the maximum rated TDP and what the sum of all the power connectors' ratings will allow.

So again, why are people complaining about the TDP of this card? Is it only because they see the 1070 has the same rated TDP...? Why care?

I just think it's odd to see the TDP match the maximum allowable power draw from all connectors.  As I mentioned earlier, most cards have a bit of extra room in there.  Take for example the 1080, which claims a 180 W TDP but has connectors to support up to 225 W before breaking spec.

Could be a few things for the 1080; the TDP could be a lie (I haven't looked into the actual power draw), there could be a lack of connector choices between 150~225w or they could have left room on the table for overclocking.

 

As for the RX480 Maybe AMD is just being honest about its max available power draw rather than saying at full load this card only pulls 115w... or the card at full load does in fact use up 150w in which case I wouldn't care. I personally think people are finding things to be picky about. 150w isn't a lot and the card looks to be a great performer for its price range. Also I do not think one can compare the 1070's TDP to the RX480, if Maxwell was any indication it seems Nvidia skimps in their GPU design specifically talking about Async Compute. Maybe they didn't go with the CU's because they are power hogs and figured they could get by with preemption and higher clock speeds. In that case if CU's do take more power, bring'em on because it looks like the new API's will be using them to their full potential.

They showed a slide and the 150w TDP. I am not saying that is the actual TDP of the card but I think that is AMD showing its maximum available power draw. I personally am not worried about it and cannot wait until the Vega cards hit the market.

It doesn't even say TDP. It says "Power". Everyone has assumed it means TDP, but has AMD confirmed or denied this?

I just sold my R9 290, so they better deliver on that whole "cool and quiet" thing. ;-)

60w from the pci-e slot (on 12v, the rest of 15w on 3.3v, this is why everyone says 75w from pci-e slot but few understand that only the 12v is used) , plus 75w from the pci-e connector = total of 135w

 

However, there's no actual measurement, no sensors, nothing to stop a video card from drawing more than the maximum recommended from the pci-e connectors. The wires are thick enough, the connectors are resilient enough, everything in the 6pin pci-e connector is capable of much more than 75 watts, in fact even more than the 150w of the 8pin pci-e connector.
