Price tag of RX 480 Revealed: $199 4GB, $229 8GB (Confirmed)

According to the wall street Journal, AMD will be selling the RX 480 for $199 USD, and availability should be at the end of June, 2016.

 

This information has now been confirmed by Raja Koduri at AMD's Live Computex Presentation.

But the need for a PC with an add-in card that includes a beefy 3-D graphics chip is another barrier that stands in the way of widespread adoption of VR. An online survey conducted in April by the Advanced Imaging Society found that 68% of respondents said VR equipment was too expensive.

“Less than 1% of PC users have systems that are capable of doing VR,” said Raja Koduri, senior vice president and chief architect of AMD’s Radeon technologies group. “The entry point is very, very high.”
AMD said its new Radeon RX cards, certified for use in VR by HTC and Oculus VR, deliver performance equivalent to that of $500 graphics cards used for VR.

Patrick Moorhead, an analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy briefed on AMD’s strategy, estimated that the current minimum price on cards comparable to AMD’s new models is $399. He said the $199 pricing comes as a surprise.
“It’s great for getting more people into VR,” said Kelt Reeves, president of Falcon Northwest Computer Systems Inc., a boutique maker of gaming PCs that serves the market.

AMD competes with Nvidia Corp. in the chips known as graphics processing units, or GPUs. Mercury Research estimates that Nvidia had 70.6% of shipments in the first quarter of 2016 to 29.4% for AMD, though the latter’s share is up three percentage points from the fourth quarter.

Standard practice in the GPU business has been to start new product lines with high-end cards that command hefty prices and profit margins. Mr. Koduri said AMD hoped that breaking from tradition by starting with a lower-cost model could have a bigger impact. For one thing, he said, computer retailers prefer to stock machines for less than $999.

Nvidia on May 7 introduced a new flagship model called the GTX 1080 at a $599 price tag that is expected to succeed a $1,000 model called the Titan X. Nvidia also introduced a $379 model called the GTX 1070, which is likely to be seen as competition to the new AMD model.

“It’s up to Nvidia to come up with a lower-priced card,” Mr. Moorhead said.

An Nvidia spokesman had no immediate comment.

AMD, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., plans to formally announce the new chips early Wednesday at the Computex trade show in Taiwan.

 

Though this is not 100% confirmed, we will likely find out later during AMD's Computex live stream. 

 

If the price tag is indeed 200 dollars for the 480, AMD would be looking to turn a profit by selling a lot of cards.

 

Also worth noting is that the R9 380 launched with a price of $199, so for the tier the price would not be unprecedented. The 380x was $229. If the 480 has 390x-Fury Performance, this is possibly the biggest jump in performance we've seen in a long time at the mid-range tier, but only benchmarks will reveal where Polaris 10 sits.

That's pretty amazing considering the quote about it being as powerful as a $399 gpu; I'm guessing he's referring to the R9 390x there. Sounds like you might be able to buy two of these for the cost of a 1070 to get 1080 performance.

I was gonna say this is unconfirmed, but considering it's from WSJ.... I don't know anymore. I guess we will find out in 4 1/2 hours!  

Problem is, Nvidia is going higher, and a lot of consumers are probably willing to make that 380 bucks for the 1070.... So I'm not sure about the future of Polaris then...

If the numbers all add up then this is great for consumers.....although, I can't see it being great for AMDs bottom line (the margins and all).

 

Not to mention it sounds a bit too good to be true....it could be specofic to VR due to new VR cheats / technologies (much like nvidia). That is have no problem believing.

I'll buy whatever seems best after a few months after reviews. not that I really need an upgrade atm. especially not since I might get a 980 ti hopefully. but if that fails I might buy a $ 200 or so gpu for my second pc as the artifacts on its 980 is driving me nuts in some games. it's weird though, I thought I could trust Samsung GDDR 5 more than Elpida, guess I was wrong Micron's ram in my main pc is still holding strong.

that's pushing into the 980 territory even (same difference really to 390x in performance).

The source said it was comparable to current $399 cards, and R9 390x is the only card in that price range currently out. There is no way you're getting a 1070 for half price.
