Will the GTX1080 be able to push 1440p at 144Hz ?

GGNN

Hi there!

First of all, I'd like to say I've been saving money for several years, and it's about time I traded my good ol' GTX 660 for a new GPU. I know I could wait another year and see what the 1080ti looks like, but I'm too impatient and tired of gaming at 1080p 60fps medium settings.

Now about the GTX1080 that I'm probably going to buy: am I sure it's going to let me play AAA games at 1440p 144Hz ? That's what I'm aiming at, and that's what the current displays are offering.
I mean, when I look at the benchmarks, it feels like the 1080 can only make it up to about 80-90fps on max settings, maybe a bit over 100fps on better optimised games like Tomb Raider. So, would I definitely be able to reach that 1440/144 sweet spot if I dialed back on the graphic settings a little?

Thanks for reading through my typos and bad syntax, by the way.

You said it bud. If you dial back the settings it will but at max you won't hit 144fps in everything.

Definitely. Depending on the game of course, you should be able to play most games on at least high settings (not maxed) at the frame count you want maybe some other terribly optimized games at like medium-high settings.

I have, and it doesn't feel that way, at least not on AAA titles. Maybe the benchmarks I've looked up aren't really reliable? I'd love to check out whatever source you have!

ok my bad I didn't remember correctly, but still 144hz on AAA isn't really useful imo, the 60-100 fps is enough.

If you are not bound to ultra settings and rock solid 144Hz and can cut down on one of those by a little bit. Like reducing MSAA by one step in games or just running with a g-snyc display an sometimes dropping group around 100fps

No worries bud. I'm hunting for the 144 @ 1440 single card solution. I'm not even sure Vega will do it but I'm hoping it will be near. I have CFX 390's and I can get 100+ in W3 but even with Freesync dual GPU is a ball ache.

Fingers crossed for VEGA

yeah

pretty much 99.9% of games you can run max and get over 144fps at 1440p

just dont use stupid amounts of AA or something like that

1070 is more for 144Hz at 1080p

1080 for 144Hz 1440p or 4k 60hz

Not sure about that. It only goes above 144 in one or two games @ 1440.

Watched that exact same benchmark before posting this topic... Is it reliable?

I like Digital Foundry although they have made mistakes on occasion. I cross-reference heavily but even then unless you have the card in your possession you can never be 100% sure.
