How does games benefit from CPU?

I don't remember that good about the gaming stuff how it benefits from CPU...

Is it better with fewer faster cores like a DualCore 3GHz than a Quad 2.3GHz?

I have a "old" desktop with P4 3.00GHz SingleCore with HyperThread up to 2 cores and 4GB RAM DDR2 with a GTX 750Ti.

How would that perform in games against a QuadCore 2.3 with same specs otherwise?

CPU: Intel Core i3 4150 3.5GHz Socket 1150 GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 760 OC RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5

depends how many cores your game will utilize as well as single core performance

higher clock speed =/= better performance (for different architectures)

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

A quad core is going to be better than that single core P4. Are you thinking about a q6600 or something? Some games like Far Cry 4, Primal, and Doom won't even open on a dual core. Some games do prefer one faster core, but just because one cpu has a higher clockspeed does not mean that it is faster.  IPC, instructions per clock is a measure of how much work the cpu can do in one cycle, and it improves with each generation. So a newer processor will be as fast or faster with a slower clock speed.  Older games really only care about 1 or two cores, but newer titles spread the load out better to 4 cores. Very rarely does a game take advantage of more than 4 cores without some sort of SLI/CFX setup.

depends on the game you're gonna play and how many cores it will use up.
