Haswell vs Skylake

I'm looking to get a new CPU an i5 to more specific. I'm between the Haswell and the Skylake. Haswell is cheaper but a older generation while Skylake is newer. Which do you guys think I should pick up?

I mean, it comes down to your budget. If at all possible, go for Skylake.

If you can fork that little extra for a Skylake system, it'll be nicer. The superior IPC will be worth it, especially if you intend to keep that for a long time.

 

DDR4 will also be a plus.

I would just pick up Skylake since it's newer, and me being me, I want to be on the "cutting edge".

If you can afford it Skylake, with Haswell in addition to being on an older generation certain other things like ram have hit their dead end. If you go Skylake now the DDR4 ram and such can carry over to new builds as well.

Skylake, if you have DDR2 and you're gonna spend money on RAM anyway...

i'd go with skylake if you can spend extra

I'd get skylake since you can still upgrade the processor to Kaby Lake should you need it.

Skylake performs better as well but in most cases not enough to make up for the price difference.

Basically, yeah! Some minor IPC improvements and other useless sh!t... DDR4 is super not worth it, as well

But the cores are also a bit stronger. And the power consumption is lower as well.

Only if you have a Z170 mobo. Which he'll most likely get if it's a K CPU, but not necessarely if he's aiming for a locked SKU.

Wait so Kaby Lake will only run on Z170 Chipset?

 

I got myself a Z170 board and still got an i5 6500 just because I want to have the option in the future.

Well, I don't think Skylake's improvements are worth the extra money you have to shell out...

I'm most likely not going to get a K CPU, I don't really overclock lol.

I also have to purchase a mobo, since I'm upgrading from AMD. Gotta save some extra cash for the mobo

Yeah im running 8GB of DDR3 ram. I don't really plan on upgrading it anytime soon.

So far, that's what intel said. Just like they trolled people by making Broadwell exclusive to H/Z97 (even though H81 / B85 and Z87 were also LGA 1150), they said they'll troll us and lock Kaby to Z170.

If you don't overclock then cheap out there... Buy an H chipset or a B chipset no need for a Z(the overclocking one)

Then, why are you even thinking about it! Buy a Haswell or Broadwell CPU and keep your RAM!

(This is why I am going to buy a 4690K instead of a 6600K as an upgrade from my FX-6100, so that I don't have to buy new RAM...)

If that is the case, which mobo would you recommend? I wanna spend like $100 max on it.

Haswell. Still great and more people have it which it will be easier to troubleshoot if you need it.
