Jury sides with Google in Battle Over Android Software with Oracle

Source 2: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/jury-sides-google-closely-watched-203132081.html

  • Google Android just dodged a $9 billion bullet

  • Federal jury found Thursday that Google didn’t need permission to use a rival’s programming tool as it built Android

  • Software competitor Oracle claimed Google had stolen its intellectual property and reaped huge profits

    • Done by copying pieces of an Oracle programming language called Java

  • Jury in the U.S District Court found that Google made “fair use,” under copyright law

    • Of these Java elements that help different software programs work together

  • Google argued that because it used only a small part of Java to create Android, it qualified for a “fair use” exemption from copyright

  • Jury’s verdict marks Google’s second victory in the case

    • US judge William Alsup sided with Google in 2012

    • An appellate court overturned Alsup’s ruling and sent the case back for a second trial

  • Oracle said it will appeal the latest verdict on “numerous ground”

  • Will use smartphone’s sensors to check users’ current locations, typing patterns and voice patterns, as well as facial recognition

  • Will create a cumulative trust score that will authenticate users so they can unlock their devices or sign into applications

  • “The problem has always been that a really good biometric - retinal scan or fingerprint - typically is hard to collect,” observed Michael Jude, a research program manager at Frost & Sullivan

  • An API-based security protocol will put personal information in the cloud to some extent, Jude noted, so “the question will be, do you trust your service provider with that kind of information?”

Nah, I already thought it through entirely too far. It could work. General rules: Every time something breaks during the stream, 1 host has to be swapped for another staff member. Staff members can't host again until their last co-host has been swapped out as well. Roster is reset upon completion of the WAN show. :P

About the robots. Working is not a charity. If you are of no use to an employer, you don't get work. Artificially keeping people in jobs is not inherently good.

Yep - which is why I'm "cautiously pessimistic" about it. In the short term I think it's a danger, but in the long term I think society will adjust... It will just be an arduous process, and I expect we'll see significant strife throughout that process...

On the topic of "bands". All I want is something to tell me when someone is calling. I can rarely feel or hear my phone when walking. It'd be nice if I had some kind of minimal bluetooth device that shocked me or something. Maybe also tell the time and show TXT messages/incomming call data?

Of all the tech shows in all the world, I never expected a ketamine x marijuana illegality discussion to be found on the WAN show. Is ketamine a 'problem' in Taiwan? Why was that the example Dennis used? Is Dennis in a K-hole as we speak?
