4k Gaming for the Masses... Feasible?

Hey all,

 

So with the 1080 dropping and gameplay at 4k (Doom/Jayz2Cents)

with the majestic PC MR 60 fps target I was wondering if we are now ushering in the norm of gaming at 4k.  Do you own a monitor capable of displaying 4k?  The next generation of consoles are apparently going to target 4k.  Is this the year that 4k becomes a feasible reality for the average PC gamer?  I want to use this thread to talk about the transition from 1080p being the norm to 4k... as I think we are on the cusp of the industry making 4k the assumed resolution for gaming... what do you think, are we approaching a new norm for resolution or are we still a way away?

IMO 4k monitors are kinda useless

4k tvs is where its at

 

actually usable screen realestate and more immersive gameplay

I think we're a little bit away.. The majority of people dont buy graphics cards that cost as much as the 1080 does (and the 1080 is sorta expensive for most people still). Plus the monitor is expensive aswell for it too. I think 1080p will be the norm for years, until finally seeing 4k (or 2k)

More of a High End Norm  1080p will defiently be the norm for a while still 

I have had a 4k monitor for a little over a year been playing 4k high/medium mixed Settings looks fantastic but i could only imagine barley any compromises with the 1080

Just turn off AA and any thing that is crazy taxing and it seems almost all games can hit that 60FPS at very high settings  and the 1070 will probably play at High settings decently for the average gamer at 4k and great at 1440p

1080p with lastest gpus is easy. really the mid-high end cards are for 1440p. you need 2 high end cards to run 4k.

Any GPU can do 4K 60 FPS. It all depends on the games you play. Games like CS:GO, Team Fortress 2, League of Legends, Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, DOTA 2, name any eSports title, are very easy to drive. A USD $1,000 build can do that very easily.

 

Mind you that any mid-range GPU from AMD or Nvidia cna do (R9 380 or GTX 960 4GB)

I was referring to other titles, not e sports.... single player games with high demand...

DOOM is very easy to fly over 60 FPS with a good mid-range card (Such as a GTX 960 for example). The graphics are good, but don't have any perceptible difference in most areas except shadow and lighting. But again, easy to hit >60 FPS with the right settings combination.

We've been there ever since the first 60Hz 4K monitors and TVs were available. It became affordable in October when the 970 was released and you could get two of them for £550, and by then a decent 4K monitor was only around £400. This also pushed the price of the 290X and 295X2 down the same price.

 

If you were willing to pay around £2000 for a monitor and either £800 for two 290Xs, or £1600 for two Titan Blacks then it's been doable for absolutely years. I have no idea why there's this massive conspiracy among tech youtubers to present 4K as something that is impossibly taxing to achieve, it's actually quite easy and has been for three years now.

I agree with your statement. Like I said, even a mid-range GPU can easily do 4K 60 FPS. It all lies in both the settings you use for your games, and the games themselves. Some are seriously demanding, and others are really easy to drive.

The title is focused on 4K Gaming. So my reply is regarding that. Nothing else. I know that TV cards can do 4K playback.

I meant TVs. Just TVs. Not TV cards  The whole on demand Internet thing has made the addition of a TV card with DVR functionality to a HTPC really redundant.

4K will be no standart for Years. 0.7% of the Steam Users had a 4K Display in 2015.

1440p or Ultrawide is the next step. Who experienced 1440p max settings dont care about 4K anyway.

We don't have the performance to run todays games at 4k 60hz yet let alone tomorrows games which I assure you will be ever more demanding on hardware. It will happen eventually but it wont be ushered in by the RX 480 or the 1080, these are maginal improvements over what we have and we need a 1080 ti to really make that level of performance possible and again by the time that is out games will be harder to run and look better. Its going to require compromises in settings for a long time to run 4k regardless of your hardware.

It looks cleaner, but not "hundreds of dollars for a good 2160p monitor vs. a good 1440p monitor" cleaner.
