Switch from 60hz to 144hz

FloRolf

Hey guys,

I have a 144hz monitor (Benq xl2411t) and a gtx590. To enable the 144hz, the gpu will always have to stay at max. clock speeds (Thats what nvidia said). But at the highest clock speeds, i also get the highest temps. 50-55°C on Idle, which is pretty hot. But when i turn the monitor down to 60hz, my temps go down to 30°C! The problem is, i want 144hz enabled when gaming but also want low temps in idle (60hz) and i have to switch via nvidia control panel everytime. So my question is, can i set a macro to do this quick and easy for me or do i have to switch manually all the time? Or is there even another option to consider?

What happens if you force the GPU at minimum clock, and set your monitor to 144Hz?

If the GPU has no problem at low or minimum clock, than I may have a solution for you.

isnt there the same problem? If i force it to stay at low speeds, it will never go up in games again? And nvidia said the speeds have to be this high to ensure good image quality without flickering or this stuff...

I have made a software which control the performance of your graphic based on what you run, using a community support catalog of games and applications. So essentially, what you can do is reduce the performance of the graphic card to a speed that doesn't cause the monitor to flicker (if such point can be found), all by being much lower than the full speed to reduce your graphic heat it produces. And when you play a game, it kicks the graphic card to it's normal full speed.

While my software does use a built-in overclock system, you can associate it to use MSI AfterBurner or EVGA Precision if you prefer to use those.

If the above doesn't work, than my software alllows you to, run a batch script or exe, based on what you run instead (or in combination) of controlling your graphic card performance.

I am thinking, as for an experiment, to use Qres (free - http://sourceforge.net/projects/qres/), a command line based program which allows you to change your resolution or refresh rate, and tell my software to use it to switch between 60Hz when on the desktop, and 144Hz when playing in games.

My concern is that it might minimize your game once as you load it, as it will lose focus of the game, as it will go to QRes, OR crash your game at startup.

If it works, and its first situation that occurs. then I can see in adding this feature built-in my software, so that it doesn't loose focus by using another program (Qres in this situation).

The small panel is the monitoring panel, get you the info of the current state of the software and its the one that does all the magic in the background.

The big window, is the management console, it's where you set everything you want.

If you are interested in giving it a shot, let me know and I'll give you what you need and how to set it up (its fairly easy).

Could you maybe tell me how to use Qres correctly first? :D

Oh yes, of course! Silly me.

First, I am very sorry, without realizing I gave you the link for the source code.

Here is a pre-compile, ready to use version: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/QRes-Download-618.html

1- Extract the files that you just downloaded. It it's 1x executable file.

2- Open the command prompt, and go to where you extracted QRes.exe. Let's say you put it on your desktop. So you'll start in the command prompt to: C:\Users\\

you just type: cd Desktop to go the desktop folder

3- Type QRes.exe /r:144 and hit enter to set your resolution to 144 Hz, and type: QRes.exe /r:60, to go at 60 Hz.

You can make a batch file so that you can just click them and it switches. Create a blank text file, call it: change refresh rate to 144Hz.bat, It needs to be located right next to QRes.exe file. And load it up in Notepad, to edit the file ('cause it's blank now). In Notepad, type: QRes.exe /r:144 Save, and your done.

Now make another file call it change refresh rate to 60Hz.bat, and like above, load it notepad, and type: QRes.exe /r:60

Well sir, i did like you said and it works fine (just on desktop) But i need to do it twice (open the batch twice) to make it change to 144/60hz. Is this normal or does it take a while to change the mode?

I actually have a way better idea.. much easier to do. I can't beleive it didn't come to my mind first. So simple and stupid.

In games, you can set your resolution and refresh rate. So in all your games set your games to 144Hz. When you run the game it will go to 144Hz, and when you quit return back to 60Hz.

Sometimes I can be an idiot. :/

lol, thats actually a pretty good idea! :D i thought there wouldn't be the 144hz option when its not enabled in the nvidia control center, but it seems like it is. So, many thanks! ;)
