The Government Accountability Office said the Pentagon was one of several departments where "legacy systems" urgently needed to be replaced.

 

The report said taxpayers spent $61bn (£41bn) a year on maintaining ageing technologies.

 

It said that was three times more than the investment on modern IT systems.

 

The report said that the Department of Defence systems that co-ordinated intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear bombers and tanker support aircraft "runs on an IBM Series-1 Computer - a 1970s computing system - and uses eight-inch floppy disks". "This system remains in use because, in short, it still works," Pentagon spokeswoman Lt Col Valerie Henderson told the AFP news agency.

 

"However, to address obsolescence concerns, the floppy drives are scheduled to be replaced with secure digital devices by the end of 2017."

 

She added: "Modernisation across the entire Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications enterprise remains ongoing."

 

The report said that the Pentagon was planning to fully replace the system by the end of 2020.

 

According to the report, the US treasury also needed to upgrade its systems, which it said was using "assembly language code - a computer language initially used in the 1950s and typically tied to the hardware for which it was developed".

First thing, I totally thought the article was talking about 3.5" floppy disks, but holy batman 8" floppies??? On one hand, we know that system will never be compromised from an outside source, but it's pretty scary that it's so unique that should something crash, how the hell would we fix it? It's quite a testament to the original coders and hardware engineers, whoever they may be. You can't really argue with the Pentagon's, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' philosophy, but the money spent to fund the maintenance is absurd.  Yes, it's going to maintain a highly critical system so I understand the priority; but this probably should have been looked at sooner than now.

I believe they also use floppies now as a way to prevent data being stolen. If it is all local on floppies even if you steal a floppy it is harder to use and obtain the info

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

Whatever upgrade they're going, it needs to be backdoor proof from any foreign state. There's a correlation on why China and Russia wants to create their own chips. It's because of these legacy deterrent systems.

 

As for a human standpoint, I sure hope any backdoor only gives them an alarm system, and not remotely detonate your enemies warhead.

The reason we have 8000 nukes is Russia. Ever since the cold war, we have maintained the MAD, or Mutually Assured Destruction. Essentially, if one nuke gets fired, they fully intend to eliminate all life on earth to make sure NOBODY comes out victorious. The terrifying thing is, even 1000 nukes could start a nuclear winter and essentially kill most life on earth. The only way that number can go down is by an agreement from both countries to rid nukes. But now, China is coming in with an "unspecified" number of nukes, making it so china must be involved too.

Technically if you were to drop as many as five nuclear bombs in a place like the Middle East - that right there would be enough to cause a global nuclear winter.  It would however make a lot of colorful glass.  Some locations you could drop many, and not have as much an issue, and then some you could drop--a handful and destroy everything.  It's fun.

@Trixanity , @ivan134 50% of the Federal Budget on Defense.  Not the secondary budget, but the primary.  As I have said to many before, our budget is currently being wasted on a variety of programs, and departments that aren't needed.  Energy, EPA, Education, etc.  States all have their own versions of those departments, and we already pay taxes for those, and then a Federal version as well, not required.  Point being is on the majority scale of Government spending, of the entire budget, our budget for the military is only 14.5% in truth, and needs to be where it belongs and was originally intended to be, and was for a century.  Cut away all the fat and bulk of Federal programs / departments, allocate the budget back to a full 50%.  Not 50% within a secondary budget, but 50% for the -entire- budget.  The military is the one, primary aspect of the Federal governments existence, and so long as politicians and other countries want to use the U.S. as police, we may as well be the biggest and most powerful.  And so long as we are hated, we may as well be the biggest and most powerful, maybe not in manpower, but in advancement, and superiority.

Now on topic:  I remember seeing a story about a nuclear base having their gate wide open, a couple of the guards had ordered pizza, and the pizza guy was able to walk right in, and to his surprise, and the guards surprise - the silo door was open, and it just needed the little click of a button to be sent off.  There was a malfucntion in the wiring, y'know, that good ol' wiring from decades of yore.  Well, it was reported, fixed, they were relieved for not having seen it sooner, and the pizza guy got a tip.  The point of that is how underwhelming maintained and manned our nuclear arsenals are as of today.  Many can be launched from a variety of bunkers or the White House, but the actual men and women at the silos are under-staffed, and the bases are in disarray - the whole system needs to be updated, not just the floppies and computers, but the bases, the hinges, the wiring, and the missiles themselves.  The programmable language they should use?  "Apple's Swift, so you can give your enemies Apps, while destroying them and all they know."

I'm not sure about that report.  The report, as descriptive as it appears, does not give precise and specific daily use of the archaic tech and in what capacity.  The report is a bit generic.  Even with their tables, tallies, etc.  For example, they may be non-critical systems.  They might be kept around because only Garry uses that system and only every other Friday.  It might be kept around because 1) non-critical  2) it still work  3) if it isn't broken don't fix it    Those system may have floppy drives.  The floppy drives may or may not be utilized at all.  These systems may be in the same offices as those related to "nuclear" systems.  Certainly these systems should be replaced if they are critical but if it is still around because only Garry or a small group of people use those systems for some ad hoc reporting (?)  then those systems would be VERY low on the budget for replacement (if anyone even remembers they exist).  The report maybe picked up on these old systems and focused in on them to encourage a bigger budget for other things.  ie, writers of the report have an agenda.

 

In other words I think it is a bit of hyperbole.    Someone is expecting to replace COBOL and their primary argument is because it was around in the 60's, I shake my head.

That's not really Libertarian at all though; more authoritarian than anything. Most Libertarians (myself included) would like to see a smaller federal government, but with that, a much smaller military and focus on the homeland, rather than international policing. 50% of GDP for military/defense is absurd. IMO, 'Libertarianism' is more or less fiscally conservative and socially liberal; a focus on the individual's rights over the power of the federal government.

You are forgetting that populations are concentrated. 1 big nuke for half a dozen big cities will wipe out the VAST majority of almost any countries population.
