What's a case speaker?

I'm pretty sure it's not actual audio but what does it do?

It's mostly for POST feedback now, as motherboards will still beep at you if something has gone wrong or if all is well.

It produces sound/beeps in patterns aka beep codes. It lets you know whether or not the PC posts, if not it will give a beep pattern that will help fix the issue.

its usually just a beep noise to let you know the computer is turning on. its really annoying I always remove it.

Indeed, as when the PC is not booting, you can simply plug it in for to check the pattern.

It's the most pleasing sound you can hear when turning on a PC imo.

On consumer cases it's a tiny buzzer that provides beeps, telling the user if there system is booting correctly or something is wrong. On workstation cases like HP and Dell, the buzzer is also a speaker, they're much bigger than that tiny buzzer and it plays sound. So even if no speakers are actually connected, might want to make sure volume is turn all the way down or on mute, don't want others to hear whatever that is you're watching.

That's another way, just disconnect from motherboard, but now you can't tell if they is anything wrong, say faulty ram or gpu, when system does not boot. It uses almost the same connector, you'll find on speakers that's used in laptops.

I mean I have a post speaker sitting around for when/if I need it, but honestly I don't... ever... (even on the old random computers I have sitting around).

I always use post speaker, even on my current system. That single beep tells me, everything is okay.

I hate the damn things, seriously!

 

I don't plug in the speaker cables on my PCs at all... never have had to either, if there's a fault you can usually find another way to diagnose it anyway, and nowadays with the LCD display you can just get the error code off there if there's a problem with booting.

I don't like noise randomly popping up, and they suck to place imho.

I listen to beeps and I can immediately tell what's wrong with my PC. Much quicker and less time consuming. But if there are no post beeps, I'll look at the post codes.

I guess I haven't used the beeps enough to not have to go to a lookup table anyways to figure out what means what (at which point it's just annoying beeps vs less annoying numbers.) 

 

Oh and obviously I have a window'ed case.

Well back in the Pentium socket 7 days, there are no post codes. Just the sound of them beeps. Well you can get a debug card, that gives you post codes, but you'll have to buy that separately.
