Intel isn't interested in something like this because as far as Intel is concerned everybody should be exclusively using Intel CPUs anyway.

we could go back to 32-bits again. 4GB RAM master race lol or just upgrade to 128bit and have never have to ever take a look at the RAM limit and such ever again lol

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

i think they have there own system for this comming too, someone posted about it earlier in the thread, i think it wasent comming untill Skylake-E Xeons tho

thing is, AMD64 extension goes hand in hand with x86 - the AMD64 is just an extension to the x86 instruction set

It does go hand in hand, but that's the thing.  AMD owns it, and if IBM owned it, or Apple owned it, they'd take it(the license) the hell away from Intel in a minute just to say, "We want x86 back."  Apple more so than IBM, and then things would go back to normal.

Thing is, x86 is now partially open (original x86 is fully open), meanwhile extensions like SSE and such still require a license.

However, those additional extensions are needed to have a fully compatible x86 system today, so my point is moot.

The limit for RAM size in 64-bit is already so outrageously high it's hard to imagine humanity using that much. It was something like 16 million terabytes.

We currently haven't seen any 'pure' 64bit ARM design, but ARM64 is a clean ISA without needing the 32bit implementation.

to my knowledge, there is only one OS that tried (dunno if successful) to run completely in 64bit mode mode: Apple MAC-OS

the idea was that they'll port every software to 64 bit - it was technically doable since Apple has full control for their OS

 

on the other hand, Windows x64 runs 32 bit exes in "windows on windows" a.k.a. WoW64
