Google to embed lots of ads to Google Maps (Phone and web)

Google announces that they will push lots of ads to Google Maps for users on Android and using the web version.

The updated Google Maps with ads will feature company logos on the map (as pictures above with the "W" logo for the US company Walgreens), and feature ads of products, such a current store promotion at the bottom of the phone/page.

 

Also, when you search for say "coffee shop" to get one close to you, instead of showing your results that are actually close to you, it will favor first companies that pay google to get first pick, tricking the user that it is closer than other coffee shops that are actually closer to you. However, the small "Ad" tag will be place on these first items.

Likewise, search results in maps could start including more prominent ads for nearby businesses. This means that when you type something like "coffee shop near me" into your Google Maps app search bar, a business that paid for an ad could appear first in your search results list. This business would be identified as an ad using a small, purple box and the word "Ad," and its related location on the map would be marked with a purple box.

Are you fine with these changes? Do you think it will help you go to locations that are more interested to you? Or will it make you start looking for alternative map solutions?

An advertising company pushing ads to their own apps??????? OH NOES!!!!!!111111!!!!!111! xD

 

We are all aware that Google's main revenue is advertisement and they are an actual advertising company right (as in that's their primary business model)?

That actually sounds like an improvement.  I'm liking this idea so far....

The only thing saving this is the fact they have the decency to mark the ads.  I think in this case it's OK, but if they hadn't done that, I would wish them bankruptcy for doing this.

Too many Android, Google Play store, Chrome, and Google search engine users. So even if it were to happen, they have a nice cushion. People are not interested in alternatives.

I personally dislike ads so I hope Google comes out with a paid version. I'd be happy to pay a few bucks (monthly or one-time) for an ad-free option but Google's never really been into the idea of letting people pay for ad-free options.

You could almost bundle that into YouTube Red - Google Free  - remove all ad's across Google's platform.

That would be perfect. I'm sure they're not making more than $5 a month off me with my ad blocker on and my minimal use of their services so charging me $9.99/month is a great deal for them and I'm sure others like me would jump on board immediately.

In all likelihood that is a legal requirement to mark ads as ads in one or more of the jurisdictions in which Google operates (I'm fairy sure that is a law in most European countries).

Never using Google Maps again.

 

From now on, I'm using Maps by Microsoft.

If it shows me the best deal in the shop I'm currently looking at in gmaps then that's reasonable.  

 

If I'm just randomly going through the streets and unrelated crap from my previous Google search comes up ID be pissed. 

 

Im mainly concerned about phone app as I can't adblockers that :(

Lovely, now most of my device's resources will go to loading and displaying the add, instead of the maps application!

I think it would be illegal if they didn't mark it as a paid advertisement.

At least it would be here in the UK.

I already naturally ignore the first few results on Google anyway I think. Ads fund google, I use a lot of their free software and services so they deserve to get paid for it. No ads, no money, no google.

Why just why. I have never seen an ad on a website, video, or anything and then been like oh yeah let me buy this or from them. If a company is always there popping up and being in my face it makes me not want to buy from them or support them. This, this is just annoying and makes me hate all the companies that pop up. If you had some nice pleasant ads on things that should have ads then I am all for it. AKA Linus Tech Tips. the ad looks like it is part of the site and doesn't create popups and say subscribe to newsletter $5 off. Basically I hate Forbes and websites with that pre page just for ads
