100 Criminals stole 1.4 Billion Yen from ATMs in Japan

100 Criminals stole 1.4 Billion yen OR the equivalent of 12.7 million USD, using ATMs on Japan.

The 100 criminals hit 1400 ATMs in 16 prefectures (something Canadians call provinces)

The Bank has stated that an investigation will be carried out.

Armed with fake credit card details from South African Standard Bank, the criminals hit over 1,400 convenience store ATMs in what seems a coordinated attack. The attack was reportedly carried out by around 100 people of an international

criminal gang who made a series of withdrawals in between 5:00 am and 8:00 am on May 15. The timing was perfect as it was Saturday night in Johannesburg and early Sunday morning in Japan, avoiding any immediate action. The group stole over 1.4 billion yen, but it’s not clear how criminals managed to withdraw over millions of dollars in less than 3 hours, since the cash machines limit withdrawals to 100,000 yen a day.

While the Japanese Police hasn’t confirmed the hours-long heist, Standard Bank has acknowledged the robbery and has put its losses at around US $19 million. The Standard Bank said in a statement that it was a “victim of a sophisticated, coordinated fraud incident,” which “involved the withdrawal of cash using a small number of fictitious cards at various ATMs in Japan.”

Dayum. That's a lot of money. And I thought Japan was free of serious crimes, just petty ones like stealing pantsu and stalking.

Usually it's a super duper safe place. not that much crime.  But this event proved it can be otherwise.

Go to Kabukicho. There are drug trades, human trafficking, weapons trades, and other wicked international crimes happening there everyday.

Japan also is the home of the #2 criminal organization in the world.

super duper safe place when we forget the Japan is home to the world's largest crime organization commonly referenced as yakuza (probably even bigger than italy's mafia at this point in time, iirc the top crime organization currently is a russian mafia family followed by a yakuza family in second place)

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!
