nvidia cards on freesync monitors. is there something we dont know?

 

i just came across the Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4. its quite cheap for a 14nm 8core up to 3ghz and you can put 2 of them in one board. they would be good for a reasonable 4 gamers 1 tower setup. it wouldnt be more expensive than the equivalent desktops.

I think it should be packed with GTX 980's or 1080's, since they will throttle less at this kind of conditions.

Also : What's the difference between this, and a Mainframe PC ?

Exactly what I was thinking, @LinusTech please do a video on a "Budget" Home system. for me both my GF and I game, Now for me I would love to build up a Box that has the twin CPU mounts as well as lets say 4/6 PCIe ports. So at first I can just throw two 980's (Super cheap now, thanks 1070's) do 2 SSD's and like one 4TB that's shared, and just two USB hubs in each desk and a screen cable (Don't need the system in Narnia) but something that I can expand on, would love to see a build on that as have no idea where to start with Xeons with regard to keeping it "budget" or maybe one with a i7/i5 and see how they handle it 

 

Thats a build I would love to see !

Any information of what is this "headless HDMI dongle from fit pc" ??? I want to know more ? Anyone have link to product page or something?

Also if you use Steam Home Streaming why do you have the dongle? Home streaming stream over the network anyway. Why you need yo stream the monitor as well?

Awesome video and great content,  but what were the 2 titan X's for as you only had 8 users. Also I found that when you did 7 gamers and 1 tower you had more B Role but for this video there wasn't that much.  Would have liked to have seen more of Brandon's excellent Brole. I just thought that 7 Gamers was presented better, this video seemed a bit rushed.

This is just enterprise hardware being abused and in the end it worked, but it was clearly a system that wasn't happy.

7 gamers 1 cpu looked a lot more refined and thought through but whatever.

Well, first and biggest difference is a couple orders of magnitude of cost (yeah, a mainframe will cost about 100 times more).

 

Second is mainframes are redundant in every way possible, the CPUs are often custom designed for mainframes, they will actually execute each instruction twice in parallel and redo anything that doesn't match, all without a performance hit.

 

Speaking of performance, a mainframe will make this look like the thin clients. Specs wise, well to put it simply, RAM on mainframes is measured in terabytes, not gigabytes.

 

Mainframes tend to only have a very small amount of local storage about 1TB is what you could expect.

 

The security on mainframes is often impressive. IIRC the ram, network hardware and CPU all have their own encryption chips to do cool security stuff that I don't really understand stuff.

 

A mainframe cannot run crysis, or even tetris probably.

 

Everything on many mainframes is hot swappable, power supplies, fans, storage, pci e cards, cup/ram combo units. If it can fail or be upgraded it can be swapped out while the machine is running.

 

They are rated for 24/365 operation for years and are sometimes in use without downtime for years or even decades.

 

They are designed to operate without a hiccup during the worst seismic conditions ever recorded for the longest durations ever recorded. They can survive off of terrible quality unreliable power.

 

I know of at least one that is water cooled with chilled water provided from outside the unit, this water goes through a heat exchange unit inside the mainframe to keep the internal coolant loop isolated. If the chilled water supply is cut and the internal pump fails (I'm not certain about that second point) then the unit can continue operating at full speed for a while. Same thing if the power is cut.

 

Mainframes are bought with 24/365 service contracts, if anything goes wrong you shouldn't be surprised to have someone show up at your door before you even know something is wrong kind of service. If there are only 10 people in the world who know how to fix the problem then one will be flown out to you.

 

Edit: Oh, and the physical specs of the CPUs are interesting, about 4-6 inches a side, i've seen some with up to 192 individual dies on them. Then, both the socket and the CPU have LGAs, that is, just gold pads,, no pins to break. They are connected with a sheet of gold (or gold plated, I don't know) springs between them. You can't destroy a socket or CPU by breaking a pin.

 

Also, some machines with more traditional CPUS have gold plated heat spreaders, apparently this harms thermal performance, but hey, when you are spending hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars you gotta bling something right? Even if you will never see it and it will perform worse because of it right... it makes perfect sense right?

 

Edit 2: some of these don't use thermal compound as the interface between heat spreader and heatsink. The two are so accurately and precisely machined that a very thin (like human hair thickness thin) coating of silicon oil on the two works best.

 

And you can expect a CPU heatsink to way several kilograms.

It doesn't actually "stream" anything.  After reading about it, it looks like it just emulates a monitor so you're PC thinks is has another display connected.  For instance, when using something like virtual desktop on your VR headset, it will only display monitors that are connected to your PC.  So, if you only have one physical monitor, you plug this bad boy in and it gives you the option for a second virtual monitor.
