My X79 (3970X) "Midas" Build: In Progress

ericlee30

You build is starting to sound more and more like how mine went and not for the better. Arnt specific FTW blocks being made by a company?

The build has seen its ups and downs lol, as far as I know for the just FTW cards, yes blocks from just about every company will fit, but for the FTW+'s no one as of now has made blocks for them, the only company that confirmed that their block would fit was EK, then on the day of EK releasing the block I noticed that one of the capacitors will not line up correctly and that the FTW+ PCB is longer then the original FTW PCB. I brought this to EK luc's attention on EVGA's Forum and he confirmed a couple of days later that in fact the ACX block will not fit the FTW+ cards.

Ouch, you able to return the cards or blocks?

Neither, I got the cards from Newegg and the return policy on those cards are exchange for the same cards only, I even tried to bargain with them and told them that if they sent me the original FTW cards, then I would just take the hit on the $30 difference for the FTW+'s cards, and they still said no :(. and at the time of getting the ACX blocks ( day one release), the only way to get them was to order them directly from EK, which is half way around the world from me lol and more of a serous hassle to return them then to just keep them.

Im surprised that Newegg wouldnt let you do anything. Did you already register the EVGA cards to your account? reason I ask is that you might be able to setup to like the 980 and only pay the diference, but youd still need new blocks.

Man, 3970x isn't something you see that often.

I've got one :)

They are pretty rare though considering what they cost. Most would have gone with the 3930k.

Area 51 2014. Intel 5820k@ 4.4ghz. MSI X99.16gb Quad channel ram. AMD Fury X.Asus RAIDR.OCZ ARC 480gb SSD. Velociraptor 600gb. 2tb WD.

  • 4 months later...

I know its been a while, since the last time I gave an update. Last time, I had bought 2 EVGA 970 FTW+'s but none ever came out with water blocks for them, so I had to go back to the drawing board, I came to the conclusion that my only two reasonable options were to either downgrade to just the EVGA 970 FTW ( 04G-P4-2978-KR ) Or upgrade to the EVGA 980ti's. So I did what any self respecting man would do, yep I got the 980Ti's :D and I also got the water blocks, backplates and plexi triple parallel terminal to go with the cards.

Here is what I have accumulated so far on the watercooling parts for this build. The only things I have left to get cooling wise, is the rads and fittings, plus some darkside leds and such.

Now this is just a fun cool pic I took of the 970's and 980TI's together.

I hope you guys enjoy, I cant wait to get this project moving smoothly again :D it's been a long road but its finally coming to an end.

You bet I am bro ;) jk jk

Really it was a hard destination to choose and took me quit a while to figure out what the best sanaryo was for me to go with. I really wanted to save some money by getting the 970 FTW ' S but I couldn't justify downgrading from what I had already bought. I ruled out the 980s altogether do to the price to performance vs the 980ti's. Over all I'm very happy with the 980ti's and I'm glad I made that choice :)

Are you having it done by someone? I'm doing a similar colored theme and I like what you've done. I'm also getting those exact cards and noticed you used the Titan block. I'm guessing the TI was similar enough?

Yes I found a local jewelry store that is willing to do the gold plating on the blocks and backplates. Thank you so much for the kind words :) I appreciate it alot.

Yes the 980ti's reference pcb is the exact same as the Titan X, it's just a cut down version ( 6 GB instead of 12 GB on the memory and slightly lower Cuda cores ) of a a titan X. The 980ti is the best bang for your buck card I've seen in a long time for top end gpus. I don't even see why anyone would buy a Titan X since the 980ti is ot now. The Titan X just does not make since anymore at its price point imo.

Not a problem man! I agree. The Titan doesn't make sense for the price point, unless you're doing 4k since the extra VRAM does help.

That's a cool idea! I'm excited to see how that turns out. Looking forward to it. If it turns out good I might get a kit and do the same :D
