My X79 (3970X) "Midas" Build: In Progress

ericlee30

I never stated it is equivalent. Just an analogy, not a proof.

Then its not a correct analogy if thats what you want to call it. Even if you went will multiple cpus, not just cores, the interconnects are completely different and so is scaling.

Also core preformance is based on the architecture and design of the CPU. So yes, 1 core from a 4670K is the same as a core in a 4770K when the same technology is enable and they are clocked at the same speed. Pertaining you have something highly multi-thread aware like x264 you will see a nearly 100% scaling when adding more cores. Well I guess only to a point because x264 can only have so many threads since video is inherently linear sequential data thus is con only be run in parallel so much.

By analogy, more cores don't always give your proportional performance, such as in multi GPU scaling. 2 more corse would not bring 30 - 40% more performance over 6 core, won't be close to 25% rather. That's the end of it.

At the very beginning of my involvement in this topic, I full agreed with your opinion. I do not see how this analogy is incorrect.

We shouldn't take it too far away from this topic, and that should be it.

I'm trying to take on two projects at once, so this one is taking a little longer then expected but hope to be finished soon :)

It will not even be 25% more at the same clock speed. 4930K vs 4820K is an analogy for that comparison. It is more likely going to be 10 to 15% capped while with the same TDP. Think about 1 to 4 GPU scaling. http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=2069079

BF4 780Ti

1-way  52      100%

2-way  99      190%

3-way  134    257%

4-way  145    278%

It's falling off after a certain point. CPU would be roughly the same idea.

If you really need more cores for content creation, consider a dual socket board. I wouldn't have gone for Rampage IV extreme if SR-X hadn't let me down so much, and Asus's solution was blue.

Games would not use more than 4 physical cores in the near future.

Keep in mind the highest res he tested at was 5760x1600, if he was to up the resolution even more, scaling may be better.

Here's some 7680x1440 with 4 titans, the scaling was actually extremely good.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1415441/7680x1440-benchmarks-plus-2-3-4-way-sli-gk110-scaling

I agree about the 8 core thing, if games don't max out 4 cores as it is, adding more cores won't change anything.

Whenever i'm gaming I barely see above 4 threads being at like 70% max, occasionally I see more threads being used, but it's probably because of background programs.

How in the name of my own blessed glory did I not know about this?!

I need to start keeping better tabs on people...

Anyway, so good to finally see somebody else making use of the Spectre Pro's

construction to do some painting on the inside frame, it's one of my favourite

mods on my own build, good to see it being done elsewhere too (are these the

ones your wife asked me about?).

Anyway, now that I'm here, feel free to proceed. :D

Wow, holy crap I am so late to respond to your post bro :(  I took a little break from this build, to help get my wife's build going. Last month I was getting ready to jump on X99 and switch out the X79 parts for the X99 deluxe and the 5960X, but my wife and I just moved to Virgina from Florida, into a Colonial style Mansion, to our wonder, the electricity was really bad in this house, so I had to have elections come out and re due all of it, which ended up seating me back from being able finish this build along with finishing my wife's build at the same time. Don't worry though this is not the end of this build :D and when we finish my wife's build, I will come back and finish this one at full force.

P.S. Yes they were the fans my wife asked you about lol, after painting them I did not put a clear coat on them before I stuck them back into the frame, so they got a little scratched, so i bought a hole other 14 of them and re did it with the clear coat and they came out looking great, with very little imperfections :) I love the Spectre Pro's fans. When they first came out I bought a set of the blue LED ones, for my last build and I took one apart and thought ,painting the rim would be pretty cool, then I saw that you had actually done it right before I started this build, which then made me want to buy the all black ones with no LEDs to try it as well.

Great minds think alike alpenwasser :D I really like your build as well bro.

No problem about the delay. Heck I've had my own build on pause for

a year now and keep needing to delay finishing it because I lack both

time and funds at the moment. Ah well, such is life, it's my eternal

project for this decade or something like that.

And yeah, I saw her mention something about Virginia being a bit colder

than Florida. :D

Looking forward to the rest of this then.

P.S. Yes they were the fans my wife asked you about lol, after painting them I did not put a clear coat on them before I stock them back into the frame, so they got a little scratched, so i bought a hole other 14 of them and re did it with the clear coat and they came out looking great, with very little imperfections :) I love the Spectre Pro's fans. Ah yes, I had the same issue with my test fan. Needed to put a clearcoat

on it to protect the paint when pushing the inner frame into the outer one.

The process still left some marks on some of the fans, but not nearly as

bad as without the clearcoat, just very minor ones.

Great minds think alike alpenwasser :D I really like your build as well bro.

It would appear we do. :D

Hey guys been awhile since I've been on my thread, like I stated in a couple comments above, I've been helping my wife ( @_TechPuppet_ ) with her Riddler build and now that it's basically done I'll be continuing my build. As with me helping her out she is doing the same for me, helping me with my Midas build. I've decided to get all the blocks gold plated due to the fact the you can get the EK EVO already gold plated, so I bought everything nickel (besides the CPU block which is already gold plated) and will have them gold plated as well. Also just like my wife's build, all of her screws are anodized purple, I will have the same as well, but in gold. I've always wanted a dual-loop system so will be adding that to this build. The only thing I am debating on now is to do just distilled water or to go with mayhems aurora hydra gold fluid. I will be adding vinyl decals as well to add to the build.

I just purchased:

1) EVGA GTX 970 FTW+ X2

2) EK Supremacy EVO Gold/Plexi

3) EK-Ram Monarch x4 clean CSQ Nickel/Plexi X2

4) EK-RAM Monarch Module-Black X8

5) EK-250 X3 RES X2

6) Ek-XTOP D5 PWM X2

7) EK- D5 Uni holder X2

Man, 3970x isn't something you see that often.

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Thanks Prof :) I think my camera skills are getting much better, still need to work on it more, but way better then the pics I use to take lol. Yes please do bro, I want you to start building again, I need to see that beast in its full glory :D

Fresh updates? Mhmmmm

I reckon gold fluid would look sweet!

Yes, and this build is my wife and I's main focus tell it's finished :D. My heart is leaning towards the mayhems aurora hydra gold fluid as well, My wife thinks that clear distilled water would look better though since I'm getting all the blocks gold plated, with all acrylic tops. I really like the idea of gold fluid running through the loop though.

I really like the carbon fiber Vinyl you did with you build bro, looks very clean.

Noice, gettin' back at it, I see.

Yep, bro, going full force on this build now :)

Man, 3970x isn't something you see that often.

Yeah, it's pretty rare to see it in peoples builds, but I think that is due to Intel releasing it so late from the rest of the Sandy-Bridge E CPU lineup.

Awesome!

Hmmm, she does have a good point.

Since the option is just distilled water, it may be worth testing it out first, it might look really cool as well!

Update?

Coming soon I hope, The build got delayed slightly again, do to when I bought the EVGA 970 FTW +'s, EK said that the ACX blocks would fit, but then I found out the the ACX blocks wont fit on the newer SSC and FTW+ cards, I have to buy two more different cards, which also is a set back :( On a bright side though I refuse to give up on this build and I will push tell it is finish no mater what :) Hope you guys are willing to bare with me during this time, I know its been a long and bumpy road but I promise not to disappoint as I have to try and out do my wife's build @_TechPuppet_ now lol :D

You build is starting to sound more and more like how mine went and not for the better. Arnt specific FTW blocks being made by a company?
