My X79 (3970X) "Midas" Build: In Progress

ericlee30

thought you had most of the loop already?

I do for the most part, but I keep changing my mind on how and what I want in the loop. For an example remember how I was going to get the Caselabs MAGNUM TH10 Case and I got the Phanteks Enthoo Primo cases instead. My wife told me I could get the caselabs case next year after taxes, So Im kind of waiting to see what X99 brings to the table. She told me I could only get one or the other at the moment. but I cant get the platform and the case at the same time :( So right now its kind of a waiting game for Intel to show off X99 and see if it is truly worth upgrading from X79. If not then I will just get the case and fill the caselabs case to the rim, if x99 is worth it then i will be sticking with the  Phanteks Enthoo Primo case and just fitting as many rads and pumps as I can fit in it.

X99 wont be if you already have a 6 core in my opinion.

I keep telling my self the same thing, but if the 8 core Haswell-E CPU's are 30% to 40% faster ,then I will make the jump but if it is under 30% I will just wait tell the next enthusiast Intel platform comes after X99 or tell Broadwell-E comes out.

theyll bring roughly 2 more cores + 10% but it will likely only be the top $1000 cpu that has the 8 cores

UPDATE: when I touch it, it turns to gold :D

Today I got started on painting the fans, I have two of them finished, now I have 12 more to go :)

Yeah, its one of the main reasons I like the bitfenix fans so much, descent airflow and customizable :)

dont forget PWM and in 140mm and 120mm! oh and if you dont want PWM you can get LED in PRO.

Yes they are out of the frame, they snap the base snaps in and out with almost no effort what so ever. I don't think they would be very easy to mount without the frame in place. I wanted to do something like that but really cant find away unless I like super clue them to the case and rads, which I do not want to do lol.

Yeah unfortunately the all black Spectre pros are just 3-pin fans but I have 2 of the Bitfenix Recon fan controllers to help with that :D. I have around 20 of the Blue spectre Pros as well, which do have PWM headers but I already tried painting one of those and the gold does not match up the way i want it to :(

2 more cores will not bring 30% extra performance, won't be even close. Mathematically, 8 core vs 6 core you are looking at 25% increase. If it applies, 4930K should be 50% faster than 4820K if clocked at the same frequency, 6 core vs 4 core. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Right.

According to guru3d, http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/intel_haswell_e_roadmap_confirms_launch_in_q3_2014.html, 8 core version would be 5960X if Intel keeps the same naming method, and 5930K would still be 6 core. 5960X being $999, while 5930K being $599 or so.

Yeah I kind of figured, but one can only hope right ?:),  I'm just getting Haswell-E and the X99 platform just to get the 2 extra cores, if it's 25% more in performance, then I guess that is what it will be, but I want 30-40%, The Midas build I'm still keeping but I want another project for myself so I figured why not not X99 :).

It will not even be 25% more at the same clock speed. 4930K vs 4820K is an analogy for that comparison. It is more likely going to be 10 to 15% capped while with the same TDP. Think about 1 to 4 GPU scaling. http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=2069079

BF4 780Ti

1-way  52      100%

2-way  99      190%

3-way  134    257%

4-way  145    278%

It's falling off after a certain point. CPU would be roughly the same idea.

If you really need more cores for content creation, consider a dual socket board. I wouldn't have gone for Rampage IV extreme if SR-X hadn't let me down so much, and Asus's solution was blue.

Games would not use more than 4 physical cores in the near future.

I do not worry about games at all.

In my initial 93 words, only 13 words, which is the last sentence was about games. Only 15% of my performance was on games in another way to see it.

Some tasks are better to use GPU. I am strongly leaning to Nvidia, not 100% Nvidia fan, but very strongly leaning to it.

howd we got from 8 core vs 6 core to nvidia GPUs...

I don't need more of anything, its more or less, that I can afford it without sacrificing selling my other platform. I want X99 just to have it regardless of the amount of performance will come with it, but I do understand were you are coming from. I rarely ever use my 3rd HD7950 because scaling does pretty much nothing for that card, just benchmarking.

Analogy.

More cores on a single CPU is not at all equivalent to multiple GPUs in the least.
