GTX 1080 will be limited to 2 way SLI

ALN118

A member of the  EVGA Tech support confirmed that the 1080 will be limited to 2 way SLI in the EVGA Forum .

Quote

We can confirm that 1080 cards only support up to 2-way SLI and anything above this will not work, no matter the SLI bridge.

Please however keep in mind that if you do use the new SLI bridge along with two 1080 cards, then it gives more performance than 2-way SLI did in the past on previous series.

I don´t think this is a big problem because 3 or even 4 way SLI is not as popular as single or dual GPU (and maybe this will give us better SLI Support?).

Did any of you plan to go for 3 or even 4 way SLI?

kind of a bummer for balls-to-the-wall systems that don't care about diminishing gains.

well this sucks. i think a lot of people are going to be a bit pissed off about this, like the people that can just throw however much they want at a PC and not care for the loss off efficiency and stuff

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

To brag, the only reason for 4-way SLI. For people who have money but no brain.

Likely because they are just using both sli bridges for 2 way and calling it new and high bandwidth...

Nope, there are monitor setups that need more then 2 way SLI performance, like 3x 4k monitors.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

Honest question: do you need the SLI bridge if you're gonna use CUDA? Since that'd be useful to have 4 of them but other than that yeah only people going for record benchmarks use more than 2 of them for the most part.

3-way is OK. But the fourth card usually scales very badly. And in some cases perform worse than with 3 cards.

Given that even Quadro cards comes with SLI fingers, so will I say yes.

I don't really care for this either way, as I will only ever use 1 single powerful card.

What I am disappointed about is nVidia is still using a fucking SLI bridge while AMD has been bridgeless CFX for a while now.

They probably have a plan for this.

the 1080 is aimed at gamers, and beyond 2 cards is kind of stupid.

I would assume the new titan, when it comes out, will have 4 way sli support for things like video rendering and whatnot

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
